Hi,

I have the annoying problem with my wipers juddering on the intermittant setting and I get that sparking or crackling noise coming from behind the steering column. I've tried the advice already on here... taking the wiper motor cover off and checking the contacts, however on mine they are squaky clean and shiny - no corrosion at all.

People seem to insist that this is the problem... however, if the contacts were mucky wouldn't I bed getting juddering on all settings - not just the intermittant setting?

I'm pretty sure this is a relay problem in my case.

A manual didn't come with my punto... instead the dealer fobbed me off with a manual for a newer model punto saying everything is exactly the same - which it clearly isn't! Mine is a Punto MkII... can someone point out to me where the wiper relays are? Maybe a picture with arrows?

Many thanks

Dan.

Hi mate,

Its not necessaily corrosion on the contacts, it is the greese that fiat used. It was not up to the job, and its not electrically conductive (i have personally tested this). You need to clean all the grease off the contacts (thorougly) and then put it back together.

And to answer your second question, no you dont get juddering on all settings with this particular problem, it only effects the intamittent setting. All of the symtoms you describe in your first paragraph are exactly, to the letter what this particual fault causes.

A sticky relay is more likely to cause the wipers to stop all together, rather than judder.

Im guessing you have seen this guide? GUIDE

I will dig out the relay number for you and location and post a pic shortly...

Excellent, thanks guys, I'll give it another go! The wiper motor cover seems a lot harder to remove than people make out... "it just pulls off" yeah right! lol :D

If you could post that picture of the relays for me I'd be so greatful.

They gave me a manual for a newer model punto, all the computer system is different and everything in a different place

Many thanks again guys

Dan

Hi Dan,
I had a similar problem with a Mk2. The wipers shuddered quite a bit at intermittant and slow , then only worked on the fast speed and finally stopped working altogether.
If cleaning the contacts in the worm gearbox does not solve the problem you could try removing the wiper motor and checking it for water/dirt and check the condition of the brushes. Ours was in a bad state but a good clean and tidying up the brushes solved the problem completely.

Good luck.
