Can Anyone Help Me With A Problem I Got This Morning While Driving My Punto. It Kust Started To Loose Power And The Engine Control System Came On. It Is Amber In Colour. In The Book It Looks Lke The Injection System Failure So Not Too Sure. Got It To A Mechanic Which The Car Conveniently Stopped At And He Said It Is The Ecu Which Costs £410.00 And If Its Not That Then The Coils Which Will Cost A Feww Hundred And If Not That Then I Think The Head Gasket Which Is Alsoi Very Expensive. I'm Completely Lost And Need Some Advice. I Haven't Been Too Lucky With The Car As It Has Always Had A Bad Shuddering Since It Bought It In Oct 2006. Dealer Said That There Was Nothing Wrong With It.

Hello and WELCOME TO THE FORUM!!

First of all dont panic!! And secondly, try another garage! How he can say its either the ECU, if not then coils, if not then headgasket is quite strange! It sounds like he hasnt even lookedat it let alone put it on any diagnosticsequipment.
First thing you want to do is get the fault codes read. When the engine management light comes on, it stores a fault code in its memeory. A decent technician can then connect the car to a computer and it will tell them where the problem lies, or at least point to what the problem might be.

From what you have said, it could potentially be a faulty crank sensor, which could cost you around £40 and give similar results.

Did the car overheat at all? Loose any oil or water? Produce any smoke? Theseare all things that would point to a head gasket.

There is a guide on this forum on how to test your ECU and coils which you could even give a go yourself.

(Oh and the shuddering could be the clutch plates being containated or unevenly worn. Try pullig away from standstill in 2nd a couple of times and that should improve it. Is quite common problem)

Hope that helps, and dont panc YET!! lol

Thanks that was good to get some positive feedback. I'll get those things sorted tomorrow and hopefully it wont be too expensive. Will keep you informed. :) Took me a while to reply coz I'm new to the forum and got lost as Top Gear came on.
