Right,

I changed the thermostat in my car yesterday. Checked it after I had done so, for leaks, and all was ok.

This morning I drove into work, and watched the needle, and it rose to approx the one quarter mark, which I assumed was the norm.

However when I stopped at traffic lights I noticed it rise fairly quickly to above the wuarter mark, and then drop below again once I had moved off. Thought that was abit strange ?

Once I had arrived at work, I left the car running for a bit to check that the fan would come on, which it hadn't, by the three quarter mark, when I switchd the car off.

The fan had been operating normally up until I had changed the thermostat.

Is it possible for a faulty thermostat to result in the fan not coming on ?

Could low coolant level stop the fan working ?

Any other suggestions ?

Thanks

would think its almost certain to be an airlock, I would read the section on bleeding your system

have you tried applying direct current to fan to see if it works?, although if working before thermostat change you would think it shouldnt be that

Right,

Drove home, and got a bit of steam from under the bonnet, along with the rising temp guage when stopped.

Opened it up when I got home, and there is a small continuous leak from the new thermostat. I assume it must be out of shape, as I made sure that the surfacew were clean and that is was tightly fitted.

Could this leak cause the fan not to kick in ??

theres a gasket that should have come with thermostat, and would think any leaking fluid will be allowing air to be drawn into system .so me thinks thats your problem

Jaybee I appreciate all the help so far.

There was a gasket, which was fitted.

I have tried a bit if instant gasket. If that is no good, I will remove the thermostat and then refit it with plenty of insant gasket, and try again

Thanks again

no probs ,good luck, I know this is probably teaching you to suck eggs and all that, but when tightening the bolts make sure you do them up in stages ,meaning a little of one bolt then the other and so on rather that tightening one side all the way up and then the other,,,if you get my drift and try not to get gasket stuff inside the system

and be very careful with them bolts they strip easy as pie

i'm assuming that what your scared off over tightening into alloy

some blue hylomar around both side of the gasket will do the trick that's what i always use after having problems in the past

i cant imagine a leak causing fan not to run unless the water level got very low ie below the level of the fan witch

if you take out the plug for the fan switch and bridge it with a paper clip the fan should run with the ignition off or on does not matter if it does you might want a new fan switch if it does not you will most likely need a new fan after checking the obvious like fuse wiring is there power there and so on
