Hi, Am becoming rather desperate and hope someone may be able to help me with this problem. I also apologise if I have put this question in the wrong place. I have recently moved back from living in Italy and have driven back my left hand drive fiat punto with me. I will have to go through the VCA for the registration process and have had the headlamps changed but am having problems with the speedometer. I purchased a speedometer from a local breaker but the garage was unable to change it over as there was a problem with the needle being fixed through . Does anyone know how I can legally sort out the issue? Thanks:eek:

hi again, the car is a fiat punto EL 2003 non power steering. When they tried to replace the whole speedo unit there was a problem with the electrics and nothing seemed to be working. They also tried just taking off the face but for some reason said they couldn't as the needle would snap off.
I'm not interested in selling it, just driving it would be good as until I can sort it out and get it registered with UK plates Im currently having to pay for a hire car. Someone said you can get stick on's , but I need something that is visible for night time driving too. Thanks

imo importing it was a very bad idea and a waste of money, but its too late to cry over spilt milk.

you need to fit an instrument cluster from a a similar model to your car, it should plug in a work fine, if it doesn't then there is a fault in the instrument cluster or you've bought the wrong one. as for mileage, it will change when you fit the second hand instrument cluster so you can either have it adjusted to the correct mileage or you can leave it showing the wrong mileage, either way you have alegal obligaiton to inform the next owner that the mileage can not be guaranteed and explain why.

when you sell it expect to get 50-70% of the value for an equivalent uk model. your insurance should cost you a fair bit more for insuring a LHD import. add to that all the costs of importing and converting and you can see it would have saved you a few hundred if you sold it in italy and bought a uk car.

when you change the instrument cluster all that should be wrong is that display will flash, you then take it to fiat and get a proxy alinement for £30 and that sorts it out.
you should still be able to get it uk registered with a km set of clocks, one of ours came all registered on uk plates with one in
