Hi mate,
Have you checked your coolent to see if it has gone down at all? Also, when you say white smoke, do you mean white smoke as in the color of steam, or blue smoke as in the colour of burning oil?
Also, is the oil above the max mark at all, or bang on it?
Cheers,
Alan

Well checked coolant and yes it has one done just filled it up again with some antifreeze aswell.

I would say the oil was "Near" the top maybe just off.

Regarding the smoke i'd say it was like steam notice it when i'm stopped at the lights coming out the back not loads but noticeable

Have you removed your engine oil cap and taken a look at it? I've only been told thats how to check if it is the head gasket...

when you remove the cap...if the oil looks like oil (golden, clear), then its not your head gasket...if its misty or foamy (and lighter in colour) then its your head gasket...otherwise, i'd check the anti freeze levels...considering its a bit too cold for coolants.

If your coolent has gone right down, then i would suggest that its most likely that you HG has gone and as such the white smoke you are seeing from the exhaust is steam from your coolent leaking into one of the pistons.
If the HG has only gone between a coolent channel and the piston, then your oil will not be affected in any way by this.
Sorry for the bad news mate!
Fingers crossed
Alan

I thought when the oil was hot it expanded (maybe not the right word) therefore you should not have cold oil up to the Max line, because when its is hot the oil level will be too high.

Then again I could be spouting Bull$hit...

No you are right mate. However, some engines are supposed to be checked when hot, others when cold. Some makes even have two sets of markings on the dipstick, one for when hot, and one for when cold.
The punto is a cold check engine i beleive.
Cheers,
Alan
