i,ve just finished putting a new clutch in my daughters fiat punto 1.2 8valve and now am unable to select 1st or second gear. I disconected the gear selector linkage directly from the top of the gearbox instead of the ball joint on the connecting rod. where the lever connects there is a pin which comes out the gearbox and has a flat on both sides to secure the linkage bracket.I was wondering if there was anyone out there who had had a similar problem or better still had a solution to my problem?

Hi I have the exact same problem, we took out the box, replaced the clutch, put it all back in and cant get 1st or 2nd. Is your gear stick learning badly to the left too? If so it seems we both have the same problem. Any help anyone?

P.S i know this is a real old post but i really need help with this one, cheers

which car do you have? does it have cable or rod linkages?

i'd disconnect the linkages, put the gearbox and selector in the same gear (e.g. 4th) and then reconnect them.

Did you put the gearbox in neutral position before dismantling it?

Put all gears in neautral then reconnect the linkages. Is your gearbox hydraulic operated?

What model of punto is it?

I am at this stage too!

Had a clutch fitted on my drive, so i can only assume he had it in neutral when he stripped it down.
He too removed the lever from the top of the gearbox, instead of the ball joint.

The vehicle is a Mk1 Punto S60! Hydraulic clutch.
