Technical Gearbox Problem? Odd Noise

Hi there guys, i have a Punto 1.2 8v W Reg (2000) 2 Door, i bought it 2 weeks ago, but more recently its been making a sort of rattly ticking sort of noise when driving, more noticably 2nd and 3rd gear, not that noticable in 2st, you can hear it in all the other ones though, its gotten more noisey, it didnt do it when i bought it, i dont think, if it did, it was hardly noticable, it sort of dissapears when you dip the clutch though.

it went for a service by a mechanic who is a family friend, he said the noise he is 99% is the gearbox, and it needs renewed, should i get a second opinion? and any similar problems experienced? Please help, all help is appreciated, however small!

Im really not sure myself, the mechanic said hes sure its the gearbox.
It rattles more when i move off than before aswell, i know most peoples do rattle even when they are fine, but when the noise got worse, it rattled alot more too, its so annoying, its like a tickity rattle ticky noise lol, its so annoying, and if it is the gearbox its so hard trying to find one, i dont know what my best bet is, how would i know for sure what it was?

the noise definetly wasnt as bad at first, which is why i said, its just a little noise il ignore it

the mechanic said when it was serviced yesterday, aswell as when he tried to find that noise problem, he said the oil in the gearbox was grey, and a horrible colour, and that he changed it, and the oil is nice and new now, although that didnt make any difference to the noise, it didnt used to be as loud, he said he thought it was my drive shaft at first, but he said its not, and that thats fine.

I dont know too much about cars as im 18, so im paying alot of money for insurance as it is, and stuff, and its really getting me down, im driving it every night to visit my friends, but, i just keep panicking that it will suddenly break.

Also this might be in my head and not related at all, but sometimes in like first or second gear, its only happened like twice since ive had it, its as if when the car pulls back for a SPLIT SECOND, i cant explain it, its like for a split second it pulls back, ergh

personally im a qualified mechanic and i think it is the thrust bearing its worn and its rattling
