Abs

Hi, my break pads have just worn down on my 1.2L 8v 2000 punto and im going to do the job of replaceing them myself with the help of a friend who has done this on his car. 1stly i need to know a couple of things.

1stly what are the best kind of pads to replace the standard 1s with shud i get aftermarket 1s or am i just safer buyin them str8 from my local fiat dealer?

2nd whats the difference between pads made for a car with ABS and 1s which are made for a car without it because pad manufacturers always ask? Thing is i have only just recently bought my punto and im actualy not sure if it has ABS or not (stupid i know) i havent driven round for a good session yet as the guy i bought it from told me the pads were about to go and needed replaceing. My punto has the outline of the ABS light on the dash but it doesnt light up when i turn the key. how can i tell?

Lastly does any1 have any tips on how to replace them yourself and if there is any thing specific i need to know and what exactly needs doin without messin it up. I was looking at this auction on ebay an was wondering if it was worth getting thes pads and dics what ya think?

Re: Abs

8v do not have abs, as if it did the warning light you are mentioning would light and go out (if working properly) when started

Re: Abs

I was curiouse of if mine did and tested it and it doesnt

as you said

the way i was told to test if a car had Abs was 2nd gear speed and slam all in while holding your clutch in as starting breaking if the makes a noise and vibrates with out skidding it does

if no vibration and no sound it doesnt (mine didnt skid when i tested it(dry))

Re: Abs

Try to brake hard as you mentioned on wet brick road...downhill

Or...on mk2...you can unscrew the main braking cylinder and whigle it out a bit, if you have ABS you will see it behind the cylinder.
To do this you need to take off the batery, batery holder, and f* with space to wiggle it out, so if youre not solid mechanic, dont do it

Off topic: If you start loosing oil...There is also a hole on some ABS where you can stick a stick and see if there is oil in it, if there is, you must replace the cylinder. Do this if you start loosing brake&clutch oil, and it's not the clutch, hoses or tits (you know those little things on your brakes) that leak...on mk2 clutch is near the motor, under the batery holder
