Hi guys, I brought my MK1 punto 60s in for an MOT today and guess what - a FAIL again. The reasons given are a) nearside front brake hose excessively deteriorated and b) parking brake efficiency below requirements. I wonder if this is the same thing for which fiat had a recall. They asked me to bring the car back tomorrow for repair and a retest. Any idea how much fixing the two problems would cost me? I've been ripped off more than once before, so any suggention from the Punto masters will be great! :worship:

new brake hose plus fluid.adjustment of handbrake, unless the shoes or wheel cylinders are starting to leak.plus 1-2 hour labour.i would reckon 100 pounds.max

A brake hose change is a quite easy DIY job TBH, just need to bleed the brakes afterwards, use an eezibleed kit. The service brake efficiency fail suggests air in the system anyway, maybe from the rusty brake pipe? Any leaks u can see? General brake check/re-line and set up I think but check condition of calipers (for seizing) discs (for wear/scoring/rust) and servo functionality. Good Luck

P.S. sorry Parking brake efficiency, check condition of rear shoes/drums as well as the above, adjust to suit. Probably 3 or 4 hours DIY work, couple of hours labour at a garage, maybe £100 - £130 inc parts for the whole job?

Foxy and Trust123, you guys are fast and great! I don't think I'll have the guts and time to do the DIY job, plus if i do it myself i'll have to pay a full fee for the MOT retest. So i guess my best bet is to bring it back to the garage tomorrow. They also said the rear brake pipes were also deteriorated, although at the moment only slightly. Should I ask them to change them all? Or leave the rear ones till I service the car next March? Again, thanks a lot guys!(y)

Thanks Joe, mine had new brakes done on the front wheel only this March. Damn those bxxxxxs didn't mention a thing about the hoses!

Mine went in today too, got a mk2b/3 punto that falied on that too aswell as some other things, quoted £200 inc test and new pads n disks

tip of the trade, rub down the brake pipe that rusted, then put rust cure on the pipe.turns them dark blue color. did it for my sons vectra.cannot fail if no rust is present.as long as there is no deep pits in the pipe.
