Punto HGT - Turbo Kits/Eaton Supercharger/16v Turbo Coop Engine
Hi Everyone,

This question has proberly come up before, currently I own a Mk2 HGT and am wanting to get more hp out of it other than chip, exhaust, air intake, bigger injectors, extra injector, so far with some research I have discovered the following options for me and would like to know if anyone has done this sucessfully.

PLEASE NOTE: This is a serious Forum, and would like to keep to the question and not go off track with Insurance I'm 35 with loads of no claim discount etc...... Thanks in advance.

Options I have heard of:

1. Replace 1.8 engine with 2ltr 16v Coop turbo Engine
2. Bolt on Eaton Supercharger (think this is from new mini cooper)
3. Add Turbo to existing engine (if anyone does one)

If anyone has any helpful information on this subgect I would really appreciate it, at this stage I am only investigating so any contact, peps that have experience in these converstions would be great. I'm in the West Yorkshire Area.

I have spoken to Turin Motors, who said its not really something they get into, but they have heard these have been done and made the suggestion of buying a 16v Coop Car cheaply as this also provide ECU etc, they also said that the HGT gearbox is as strong if not stronger than the 16v coop gearbox so prop wouldnt need to change that, but as I said they have not had experience with this type of converstion. I also understand that the HGT Engine bay is too small for the 20v Turbo Engine.

As I said any comments, useful help would be much appreciated.

Thanks, Not into NO5... really want a turbo or Charger!:D

Novitec in germany did/do a conversion but was several thousands.

How much do you have to spend on the project, if its that sort of cash I would opt for a replacement engine.

The 20v coup engine has been fitted to a car in brigton iirc

Thanks for that, any contact details of the company or person who put the 20v in? Have tried contacting Novitec no answer from them via email  Budget wise I'm not sure yet, I have few grand but really want to explore all ooptions before commiting.

These things get out of control very quickly so please do set a budget.

You can fit any engine in the car but of course depending on the work its going to cost simaler amounts.

Personally I would tune the 1.8 and if thats not enough go for a low blow system by rotrex, but 200bhp from a 1.8 n/a punto is plenty, you will have trouble getting the power down and want to spend all the money on chasis tuning.

Contact Clovertech, they are a fiat and alfa specialist in London and who I use when things get too difficult.

forget the 20v.its too wide for the punto.
yes its been done but destroys the turning circle of the car and involves cutting.
tbh i would most likely go for a coop 16v turbo engine as the 'easiest' swap.
we have a thread from a forum member who has supercharged his punto so have a look at that for blown options

Thanks for this, I will look into to Rotrex charges. In the meantime can you expalin what needs to be done to the 1.8 to obtain 200bhp?

Contact Clovertech as they can either supply parts or do the whole hog.

But it would be;
induction revision
calculated exhaust revision
head porting
block re-working
sump breathing
variator changing
re-profiling camshafts
camshaft timing adjustment
ECU recalibration
Possibily valve size increasing etc.

as well as a couple of other things I'm not aware of hence the necessity to make contact.

He has done it before... Just not all owners frequent the forums.

Easist thing to do would be to say you have X in mind to spend, what can be done, or I want X power, whats the cost and what would need to be done.

listen mate if you could get about 180bhp out ov your engine contact AVANTI motorsport and look into gearboxes as you would be very surprised at how much acceleration can be gained from a good gearbox.

i had a bravo hgt147 that was tuned by AVANTI and i **** u not it was faster than my mates civic type R 52reg and would keep up with a couple of scoobys round doncaster, i dont know what work had been done as i baught the car like that but i do know it was amazing and that when you got to 4000rpm it was like a turbo kicked in.

Ta, And this a very good point, it does also come down to gearbox ratio, however I would like to get approx 200bhp first and the charger looks like the go as there are no internal reworks to be done to original engine. I spoke to Rotrex and they rec, if they can line the unit up with the cars pullys, for the standard 130bhp @6000 rpm the most it will take is 6/7 psi boost and this will produce a 40% increase in power.... Now, back to the gearbox, I will be looking at this once I have acheieved the desired BHP as no matter what the ratio is on the gearbox the BHP will remain the same, the ratio will just make it feel quicker and pull harder. Also that "Turbo" feel I dont think that would be the gearbox, more than likely at that rpm the Cams would be starting to work. Thanks again.

my friend who i sold my Eaton M62 to had it fitted to his corsa1.8 sri wich was totaly std apart from the charger had it mapped to 180bhp so i should imagine that with some tweeking would do 200bhp, only thing is they are like rocking horse **** lol im looking for one again now for me for my bravo hgt project lolwill let ya know if i find another 1

Yeah, I have heard this also.... you get that with the Eatons (and the trademark whinning noise), Rotrex claim this does not happen far smoother and quieter, but you can still have the "rattlesanke" BOV noise, although that would only be for effect and not contribute to the BHP as its constant boost already. Let me know anyhow as I will not close the door on that option. Thanks!

This mob make a supercharger kit for the hgt, stage 1 produces 171bhp, stage 2 produces 187bhp. They use a rotrex blower, they sent me graphs of power outputs and prices so if you've got an email address I can send you a copy of it if you want.

Link not working mate, but glad you joined in on forum, I'll Private message you my email for the info. Thanks!

there is a better way of supercharging if you have got the extra money and that is to relocate the throttle body infront of the supercharger so it goes AIRFILTER, THROTTLE BODY, SUPERCHARGER, INTERCOOLER, MAF AND INLET this gives real good throttle response and saves on burst pipes.
tis the way im doing it on my car

 Got the email thaanks I have sent them an email still waiting on a response, Anyone who is thinking to do the same mods discount Novitec as they no longer do turbo charges..... shame as there converstion looked mint!

Anyone else go any info???????

yes sos i forgot TRY BBR they did one for the mx5 and it was a pretty good conversion getting 200bhp out of the 1.8 without any internal work.
