Hi, I have the same problem as Mike... the Steering in my punto keeps going and coming back. I have taken it to local mechanics telling me its the motor, had some repairs on it, and same day I took it back home, within an hour the power steering dissapeared again. Then an hour later it was fine, but very temperamental on and off. The steering would dissapear even whilst I am driving or parking or stationary or car would be switched off. On occaions I am able to switch the car off then on again and it would fix it , however now the power steering switches off for longer durations and the wheel sign comes up on the dash board.

It is extremely hard to drive it without the power steering, and turning corners seems almost impossible unless u have some toned muscles! (Never mind parking it!)

The fiat dealers told me it would need a new rack for £500 plus labour...does seem an extortionate amount to spend. Was wondering if anyone has same problem and how to fix it for a cheaper rate. Or if its possible to get a reconditioned rack (if such thing exists)...any sugestions help is welcome. Thanks.

Re: Punto Steering Problems!!

Please help, my Grande Punto's steering wheel is making a terrible 'crunching' noise when i'm driving and on damp mornings the power steering keeps going off while i'm driving too, could this be just a loose wire?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated:cry:

you need to post in the Grande punto section.

Any mk2 punto steering faults, if they are intermittant get a new battery! Make sure its the right one aswell. I had same fault until I changed the battery over. Much cheaper than 200+ repair bills just to get a reconditioned unit in.
Only if the problem is permanant is it that you need to change the steering column

Looking to c if some1 can help me. My punto active sport a 2007 has started to make a noise from the steering wheel. Thought it was needing fluid but it's electronic. You can't hear the noise from outside the car any1 have any ideas. It's driving fine and the steering is not heavy so haven't got a clue x

I have a 06 punto grande sport and it has just failed its mot because of an electrical fault on the power steering. The garage have advised me I will have to go to the fiat dealership and will cost approx £600 :(. The steering pulls to the left and does not fully return to central position automatically.. Does anyone know if a replacement steering column would repair this issue or do I have to go through the dealership?

Hi wondering if anyone can help me ? , I just bought a mk2 punto and noticed that when I put the steering on full lock I find the steering heavy but when I leave it a while it goes back to normal . Can anyone help me ?
:bang:

I have had exactly the same problem with my fiat punto 1.2. Is your power stearing manual or electric? do you have a city mode on your dash?
I wouldnt trust the dealership to have looked into other possible solutions to the problem.

Check the guide in the punto section however as it is steering I would strongly recommend taking to a fiat dealership.

:confused:where would you take it to then...halfords?

Hi. I'd appreciate some advice before I part with AUD2200. My 2006 Punto 1.4 Dynamic may have power steering problems. Contrary to issues found in other posts, my steering is feather light, precise and I don't get any warning lights. I am getting an intermittent "groaning" sound at low speed and a similar sound at idle when the wheel seems to want to self-correct. Is this normal function or do I need to be worried? I've taken some comfort from the fact that control will never be lost, just get heavier. thx

The powersteering is always active unless it switches off due to a fault
as a result sometimes you will get some groaning / slight buzzing from it
Shouldnt be noisey, on full lock tho i wouldnt worry

Mine makes a horrible Buzz when i hit full lock and hold it - where it cuts the powerassitance down to prevent damage

If its stupidly light - make sure you dont have CITY switched on

Do not let the garages RIP you off, my wifes 2005 fiat punto developed steering problems 6 months ago, took it to fiat main dealer, diagnosis said needs new steering column, motor, etc, £650.00, the steering was very intermittent, and gradually got worse over the months, Did not let fiat touch the car, i thought this a RIP off, so i had a look at the job myself, First thing you check is the CONNECTIONS going in to the ECU, which is located to the left underside of the steering column, here you will find 3 Multi type plug connections Make sure they are fully home, Especially the steering torque connector, this was the fault on my car, due to the electric cables being tight in the cable holder, and movement of the adjustable steering column, must have pulled them loose over time.
So if your steering is intermittent , then it will most likely be these connections.
Good Luck, puntofiat29

Good evening, new member but an old question, I am sure.

Punto 1.2 sporting Active 8V 2004

Bought as a "fixer upper" for my son but we cant seem to pinpoint the problem, diagnostics say that there is no alternator voltage or speed sensor signal to the steering module. Previous owner replaced the entire column but still no joy.

Then there is the mysterious wire, thick black which reduces to a thinner white wire hanging loose below steering column..

Could this be related to my error messages?

Any help would be greatly appreciated as he is trying to keep his costs down.

Thanks

(Then there is the mysterious wire, thick black which reduces to a thinner white wire hanging loose below steering column..)

this is airiel for remote cental locking, it shouid clip to plastic behind cowl,

check thin wire on back of alternator, this held in place with 8mm nut,
wiggle wire if loose tighten 8mm,

(remove battery lead first,)
