I picked up a 94/M Punto the other day as a runaround..

"Chunky" has a bit of a vibration coming from the front-end at speeds less than 40mph. It feels just like out-of-balance wheels.. but it goes away at higher speed, so I'm inclined to think it's not that.

Apart from that vibration / humming, there's no unusual noises.

Anyone have any ideas? My thought is possibly the engine mounts are worn. Would this have these symptoms and if so, how can I check they're okay (what's the standard test)? Ta.

I had a look at the big engine mount on the o/s of the engine bay (left as you look at it). The engine does vibrate /move around a bit compared to other motors I've seen, so it may be worth a punt(o) :D to change the mount - the bolts seem tight enough otherwise...

Anyone know how simple or complicated this is? I'm assuming I can "just" unbolt it from the body and bolt in a new one.

Apart from sticking a jack under the engine to support it while the mount is off, anyone have any crafty tips to make it a simple job?

as long as you make sure the engines weight is on the jack and you dont actually raise it, otherwise getting the bolt and hole to line up becomes abit difficult.

Silly questions but wheels are not buckled and are properly tightened on the hub?

With the car jacked up the wheel moves freely and you can't hear the noise you would normally hear?
