This time, it's a ticking/rattling sound that gets faster (not louder) as the car (not engine) gets quicker. i.e., it happens if you have no engine running and roll down a hill.

For some reason its more noticable when the car is slowing. It's unaffected by the clutch being in or out, engine speed or even the what gear it's in.

It's coming from down and forward of the gear box.

It's a 2001 1.2 engine.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Thanks for your suggestions chaps.

I'm gonna check out each one today - if I can under the car! One of downsides of a sporting!

If I don't diagnose today, the mechanic will on Monday, so I'll post the cause soon.

Orginal poster here:

I got a call from the workshop today. They said the noise is not something they would normally concern themselves about. They say it's wear & tear in the gearbox and that to diagnose it further, they would have to take it apart, which would result in the automatic replacement of parts.

I'm wondering if it's worth throwing in some gear box oil treatment.

So, it looks like my Fiat ownership has got off to a great start! [:(!]

Dwayne have you had a new rad, if so it has not been bleed properly and the noise you hear is because of a air lock in the system. This can cause the car to overheat and can blow a headgasket

What about the wheel bearings check these by jacking up the car and trying to move each wheel in and out, if there is any play could be wheel bearings

Sensible mods go far

Hi Chumhill

Who are you replying to, Davemarsh or Dwayne?

Cheers,

David
PS. Dwayne, probably best to start a new thread for a new question.

Orginal poster: Took the car to an independent mechanic today, who came for a drive with me. We put in up on the stand and lifted the front wheels so we could rotate them. He put on his stephascope and found it to be something inside the front diff - what a nice chap!

So we know where it's coming from, but we don't know what's causing it. He said he would have to strip it, which would involve removing the gearbox - bugger!

So, I live with the noise or pay a mechanic a day's work to fix it.

Anyone else had a diff problem and had it repaired[?]
