Hi all.

The ongoing saga that is me trying to fix my 1.2 mk1 continues.

I've replaced the HG, got it skimmed as informed, put everything back together and now it won't start.:bang:

The starter moter engages, and all the normal noises occur, but just when it would normally catch it doesn't, and in fact ?stumbles?.

so i get normal starter motor sounds, then ung, starter motor, ung.

I stopped this after the first attempt.

Is this something fairly obvious like
1)there is no fuel [removed assembly whole, so i don't think i could have affected this]
2)no spark [possible; i may have done something wrong here] or worst fear or;
does this mean that i've ballsed up the timing and every attempt to start it is actually destroying the engine?

Any advise would help, i've battled the rain all day (another possible? rain where it shouldn't be?), and really just want it to work.

Thanks to anyone,

Liam

Firstly re-check the timing. that can be done easiest by setting the cam sprocket mark level with the casting pointer, then check with a mirror and lamp through aperture in top of bell housing.
Ensure that the CODE light goes off.
Check that a spark plug laying on engine top does spark when turning over.
Check that plug leads are on in the correct order.

Sounds like it might be 180 degrees out, the timing has to be set when piston No.1 is at tdc (at the top).

Make sure the bottom pulley (which drives the aux belt) is fitted correctly.

The RPM sensor reads off this and it's easy to refit it wrong if in a hurry. It's held on with three 13mm bolts and has a locating "dimple" on the face of the crank which it locates onto.

You won't damage the engine if the valve timing's out as valve-piston contact is unlikely due to its "safe" design.
