To make a long story short, my 1.9D engine is shot... Sad, yes, but I see a bit of a silver lining here...

Anyone know if it is possible to drop in a JTD engine in its place? Its an Mk2, W reg.

Otherwise I've got to hunt the breakers for a plain old 1.9D (n)

well it definately fits in the bay. If you can get everything inc ecu, exhaust turbo etc I cant see why it wouldn't be possible. Same mounts I assume (may need to check this) But the wiring could be a bit of a bitch

I know a few people who have done similar conversions on VAG cars and it's a nightmare with the ECU and the immobiliser (Given the immobilser is often built into the dashpod and there can be big differences, not sure with the Punto though).

Sorry, I might be missing the point, but even a 2000 plate JTD HLX is only a £2000 car.

There is a lot of time and effort involved in what you want to do and I have to say it doesn't seem economically efficient to do this, even if the new engine is free. You would need to check compatability of the exhaust, fuel pump/tank, gearbox, and do a weight comparison (If the JTD is more than 15kgs heavier then it will upset the suspension and you will need to change the springs/dampers/ARB). I know this might not be what you want to hear and I am all for such projects as labours of love but you have to question it's viablility compared to just going out and getting a newer better equipped car.

Just my 2c's...

Well the 1.9 JTD is just a common rail turbo version of the 1.9D engine, so the basics are pretty much the same.

You would definitely need an JTD ECU which is independent to the engine, as the D one won't be able to see boost afaik...

According to the manual, a JTD weighs 1040kg and the D weighs 1020kg

Thanks for the advice guys!

As this is not a labour of love, more a labour of 'get the thing fixed and maybe upgrade cheaply', I've decided to remain cautious and just put another plain old 1.9D in her.

Such is life, I suppose. I have lost the spirit of adventure I once had, lost somehwhere in the thousands of ££ of I've spent on cars over the years. Will keep the Alfa idea on ice though. I like the idea of the 16v. That shouldn't be much of a hassle were the car originally fitted with a common rail engine.

There is always tomorrow I suppose.

Cheers guys!

alfa 147 16v jtd = 150bhp and 220lb ft of torque as std  :D

plenty of space under the bonnet to fit it in, just g'box WILL NOT TAKE IT, and the 147 box is bigger and set up for a wider front end.

I never knew there was an NA 1.9 till a few days back when I drove a mk2 NA D, it was the slowest stogiest thing I've ever driven (bar a grande punto 1.2 8v  ) you've got teh weight of a diesel and no poke and from what the gauge seemed to be showing, no better fuel economy

AFAIK the 1.9d and jtd are similar so far as engine block and mounting, but the rest, no idea.
best bet would be to secure a whole 1.9jtd engine, ecu, engine side wiring loom and plug and play it.
its not like its THAT much more work than just fitting another engine of the same type, just need to change wiring over.
cost wise, the jtd won't cost you anymore than the NAd from a breakers (talking mayb £200-300 oooppp noorrff. and closer to £1k if south)

I’m going to swap engine from fiat bravo mk2 1.9 150bhp into a fiat doblo mk2 1.3 jtd. Recently bought fiat bravo gbox broken just for £250 a car. Really hope it’s possible swap to my doblo mk2
