My 2000 1.2 Punto has just failed it's CO emissions on the 2nd fast idle test for the 3rd year running!

Last year we took it to the dealer who couldn't find anything wrong. Eventually booked it in for an MOT on a saturday, added some petrol additive drove it up and down the motorway in 3rd then it passed.

This year, have added additive driven it then taken it for testing (although I think it might have had to wait a couple of hours before testing) but still failed.

Does the engine have to be really hot for it to pass? And is this problem really un-fixable? If seems really crap that the dealer can't fix it and doesn't seem to know what to do?

often the MOT tester uses the wrong figures, they test for 0.3 something when it should be 0.5.

Tell the MOT tester to check with DVLA as the punto 1.2 has higher emmissions than the default settings on his machine.

Really? How does that work? Would I be able to find the same info out somewhere? It's been annoying our mechanic for the last 3 years as no-one can fix the fault.

Its not a fault. The emmissions testing machine defaults to the wrong settings, they need to check the DVLA poster on the wall and see that they have to use different settings.

its all computerised now, put reg and vin in the main computer and it conected to the testing machine ;) it tells it the corect thing to test for.

and yep it needs be hot to pass, tester should wait till fan has come on and gone off a few times before testing

I had mine done oppersite a DVLA Truck testing station (round the corner from oldschools house) and they have an old computer system that was not connected to the DVLA, the readings are typed into another computer to get the new style MOT.

He had to skip the default setting and put the oil probe in and then it would do the custom settings by vechile.
