Styling Shortening My Punto Gear Stick

Hi everyone!
Just wondering. I've recently changed the horrible plastic gear knob off my Punto 75SX and put a chrome one. But as I took it off, I noticed that the gear stick was just a plain rod and not one that has a twisty screw thing at the top of the rod (like a screw), if you know what I mean.
Anyway I wanted to know is it possible to cut the gear stick and make it shorter for a sporter gear knob look?

What about reverse gear, do you not need to alter the gear stick for that??

Maybe it's just on the MK2's but I have to lift it up (the reverse gear bit, yes that is a technical term) to move into reverse.

on the mk1's its a push down so it aint so hard, but im still not sure if chopping it of it a great idea

Well, I've heard some people have done this to teh Mk1 Punto but when I looked at my gear stick, I noticed that the top 2 inches was smaller in width than then bottom half. Now I'm not sure whether I should cut towards the bottom half, cos' it doesn't look like the knob will fit if I do, whereas if I take off about an inch off the top part which is smaller, it will fit, but theres no point of me hacksawing off for 10-15 mins for just just an inch, if the end result won't make any difference, if you know what I mean.

The top part is tapered for the old knob, you arn't considering reusing the original one are you[V]
All after market knobs will fit on the larger part of the shaft.

It's a funny old world, ain't it? - I spend each night deleting a pile of spam that generally promises ways of lengthening your Knob, then I come on here and guys are desperately trying to shorten theirs!!!

lol i think i got the same mail on my yahoo address!! anyways no one as answerd SH33N's question! I am curious on this also as i have the mk2 with the pull up reverse and i want to shorten my stick because i am used to a rover sport and this is like using a transit gears to that!!

mk2 punto in white, blue interior and more neons joining the car every day!! looking for ideas!!
