our Fiat Punto 'Stile' 1.2 1999 has been making a squealing noise, after we've been driving for about 30mins+ if we've been stopping & slowing down alot. We thought it could well be something to do with the brake pads heating up, but the garage can find nothing wrong. If we stop for, say, 5 mins, then the squealing seems to stop, but will start again after another while. It sounds like its coming from one of the wheels.

Anyone have any ideas. Its getting pretty annoying cos if we bring it to a garage they never seem to be able to hear the noise

really grateful for any replies, cheers

Any ideas from where exactly the noise is coming from?
Is it high or low pitched?
Can you pin-point it inside the engine?

I would hazard a guess at the fan-belt ... but in my experience that only squeals when worn and cold.

they said it comes from wheel! if it was inthe engine i would say cambelt tenshioner bearing.

I'm having that same problem too at the moment. Haven't taken it to the garage yet but it definitely my front right wheel. It must be something to tdo with the brakes, they are smelling a bit, but the noise sounds like its metal to metal, but the pad wear is fine. Thought that maybe the calipers are seized up but I'm no expert. Let me know if you get it sorted.

This sound very much like the brake back plate scraping on the disc, very common. Take front road wheel off on the bottom of the disc take note of how close the brake gaurd is from the disc! Pry the plate back, you should have a nice gap. Do not try and bend it anywhere else you will create more noise. This should cure it.
