Punto (Mk1) Gear knob removal

same method for MK2 but you dont need to cut anything , just get a screwdriver and ram it from below to loosen it up a bit then just pull it until it comes loose, or until you injure yourself.

hi mate thougt i would just tell u the gear nob just pulls off i did it ti 4 puntos the need a good tug but they do cum off easy enough :slayer:

i changed my old nasty gear knob to a nice new one but now i have a new problem the stick cover keeps slipping down any ideas how to keep it up i was gonna use tape but thought it would look tacky!:bang:

:idea: Whilst trying to change the gear knob I managed to turn the gaiter or "stick cover" inside-out. So here's a solution I havn't tried but can't see a reason why it wouldn't work.

Turn the gaitor inside-out, wrap some tape around the actual gear stick near the top and then put a cable tie around it. (the reason you need the tape is to give the cable tie something to grip on to.)

When you put the gaiter back it shouldn't slide down without it being pushed, it also means nobody can see the 'solution'.:idea:

lmao almost screwed myself last night...
i bought a new gear knob from halfords, a nice blue shiney one
on the way back me and my friend decided to stop off at McDonalds drive through for somethin to eat, so we were sittin eatin when i decided to try see if the old knob would come off easily after looking at this post before i left the house.
it came off with a simple pull, no elbow grease involved. thought i broke it... lol. anyways, it was pretty simple... and easy!
cheers for the help on the post anyways - still trying to find a solution to the gaitor bit.. probably just buy a custom one.

mine wont come off. it just pulls up a little bit then stops. grrrrr

Just get hold of a spacer thick enough and glue this to the inside of the gator..i used an old spacer i found in my garage it was used for spacing a motorbike rack did the job an it overcome the problem...or use a nylon spacer same thing but even better

i got a new gear gator, leather one
then cos it was for a universal fit i just got it and cut the bottom to shape then used bumper adhesive to stick it down without the surround, altho i want a silver one

Sorted.

Put the gaitor inside out. Burst 2 small holes in the top of the gaitor, about 2 cm down from the top itself and about 1cm apart. get a strong piece of string, or (wot i used) a zipstrap (other names used) and put it through the 2 holes, like sewing (See Ref. Mother for info)
Pull the zipstrap tight, but not too tight that it wont fit over the gear stick. Fold the 2cm~ excess you left at the top of the gaitor over the zipstrap and push the gaitor back the other way, fit back over the gearstick.

Sorted. shouldnt move up nor down now.

use a hack saw and split it.

i just sawed mine off just below the gear nob with a hack saw the tidyied it up with a file sits nice and low now much better than the stock hight

hey guys first post ever wont be the last though i have an n reg punto and just sharing some knowledge as i just changed my gear knob .. also to a halfords one in about 2 minutes. Its really not too hard all you need is a pointed object (the drill you get in screwdriver packs are ideal)

So under the gear knob slide the drill up until it goes past the contracted bit halfway up the gear knob once its past there a small tug will get the bugger off.

With regards to the gaitor all i did was use some super glue and glued the very top of the gaitor to the inside of the bottom of the gear knob (this bit that goes on first)

Leave to dry and enjoy it is also completely undetectable if done carefully enough

I replaced mine with a richbrock one but changed the logo to a fiat punto one printed on sticky back, got a free matching lighter with it.

Mine's a Mk2 version and the reverse gear is a lift-up type.
Any idea how should I change it and am I able to use any aftermarket type of gear knobs?

Mines a lift reverse too (the one in the pick above) just make sure you have enough clearance for the lip to rise up (20 mm give or take), search ebay for lift reverse nob, or pop into halfords for a free parts mag (thats where i got my richbrock one in the pic):worship:

my gear nob keeps coming off when driving, so to fix it Fiat have charged me £100 for a new gear gator! ... my reverese vessal was broken so it just went straight into reverse! .. not good, also i tried gluing the stick but it just eventually comes apart when u change gear going 70mph down a motorway! and then gets stuck in netural!

is it the same on all mk1s?

is it all simple as it looks?

or are there any complications to watch out for?
