Good morning,

I have recently removed the wheel hub and bearing of my Fiat Grande Punto mk3. When I removed the hub and bearing the center bearing collar fell out but I cant press it back in. I thought I had broken it so I removed the other one to see what I had done and this one fell out too.

Can you put them back on the stub axel and press the collar passed the ball-bearings into position with the nut and washer or do I need new hubs?

Any help would be grand

Thanks

Mack

Why would you remove them if you weren’t going to replace them ?

Someone recently posted a comment on my YouTube channel about removing the hubs just to change drum brake shoes which seems a bit pointless to me because it’s no more difficult to do with the hub in place!

Anyway back to your issue. It is my understanding that the bearings are a single piece and a sealed unit so if any part of them or the seals has dropped off you might need to look at replace if them, on the plus side they are fairly cheap

Also if you have a Grande Punto you might want to post in the Grande section rather than the Evo section, they are basically the same car but most Grande owners won’t venture here and so you’ll struggle to get many answers to your questions.

Welcome to the forum

Thank you for your response and I will now change to the grande portion.

I took the hobs off for more spaces and I was following other instructions.

The bearing is not enclosed hence the reason for asking. Thanks again for your help and direction

Why would anybody remove anything if they weren't going to replace it? Erm, it's called 'preventative maintenance'. Leaving things in place until they fail (which from your comment I assume is your chosen regimen) is illogical.

Logically, it's much easier to replace brake shoes with the stub axle removed - I've done it for decades on all manner of vehicles. After all, if one goes to the trouble of axle-jacking and fighting off rusted brake drums to fit new shoes, why not check/re-grease the bearings while you're at it?

Also, one learns from everywhere, and I can't believe that Fiat (or any manufacturer) use distinctly different methodologies for basic car functions, so your Evo snobbery in unfounded.

Welcome to the forums. All of them. :)

Removing hubs just to replace the drums/shoes is completely unnecessary and lame step.
There's nothing "preventive" (maintenance) about it.
Drums/shoes are not problematic to service (if you know what you're doing).

Because it's a sealed bearing that you cannot just open up and repack with grease. If you take it off, replace it, its basically less than £30 for a wheel bearing on these cars, but then again if it isn't broken and it's working fine leave it alone. if you do take it off and disturb it you risk the bearing not going back right, the torque setting not being right, basically you risk the bearing now wearing out when it was just fine if you left it alone, and now you need to buy a new hub nut anyway (which comes with a replacement wheel bearing) you also risk damaging things like wheel speed/ABS sensors if you start disturbing things that were working fine before.

If you want to pull things a part that don't need pulling apart, then feel free, but these are not some 1960s car with roller bearings that you take out and repack with grease. most cars for the last 20 - 30 years have sealed wheel bearings that you just throwaway and replace. there is no preventative maintenance to do here.
Drum brakes are pretty easy to service without having to remove the hub.

Welcome to the forum,. You'll see this post dates back to 2021, usual etiquette of forums is to not drag up old threads, especially if the reason for doing so is just to attack someone.

Secondly, the forum is divided by model, so if you have a Grande you post in the Grande Section, An Evo you post in the EVO section. The reason for doing so and suggesting the post be moved in this case, is that the Grande section is generally more frequented by people and the OP would be more likely to get an answer there, than in the Evo section where the Evo was only really made for 3 years, and so there are fare fewer cars around, after which the sales dropped off and there are even fewer of the post 2012 "Punto" models.

This is not "Snobbery" it is trying to get the person asking the question more help from the forum which is relevant to their car.

Yep, nearly 13 years on this forum, some 13k+ posts, i'm basically a newbie..... 🙄
