Not sure if im asking in the correct place.....

I have a 2011 Punto evo 1.4 multi air turbo and slowly but surely it started to run rough and get more problematic including would randomly have a misfire when cold. £1000 and a new multi air unit later it seems to be better but today after been stood for around 6 hours, when first started up it fired up as normal but immediately cut out, I then re started it but it was hesitating when I was trying to rev the car. After around 15 seconds of this it cleared and not done that since. Iv plugged the car in and there’s no fault codes... any ideas?

The multiair unit relies on high pressure oil to operate the inlet valves.

The engine delivers normal oil pressure to the unit, which has a little pump that (possible one per cylinder) that then creates the pressure needed to operate. I think at startup it just opens the valves mechanically, so can operate momentarily without engine oil pressure.

There seems to be an oil delivery issue. There's a tiny filter within the multiair unit that needs cleaning occasionally, but with a new multiair unit fitted, that will not be the issue.

These engines are critical on the correct oil grade and spec. Oil too thick, or too thin will affect operation. The oil filter will have an anti-drain function, which is a rubber flap, so can leak or fail to seal, allowing the oil to drain away overnight, or especially after a few days.

Some questions.
1. How old is the oil in the engine?
2. Who put it in? Do you know what it is?
3. How old is the oil filter?
4. How long (time/miles) from first purchase of this car until the problem started?
5. Total miles of this car/engine?

It as had a full service 5 weeks ago using genuine fiat parts and oil. The multi air unit filter was also changed. The problems started a couple of months with a slight miss fire when cold and gradually got worse till the vehicle would not start at all. which is why the multi air unit got changed last week. The car as done 102k

Has a compression test been done? I guess there might be a special procedure for the multiair, but it is best to identify or rule out head gasket issues, or piston ring wear/damage.

Might be a good idea to check the normal oil pressure too.
I would hope the garage that replaced the multiair unit checked the oil supply to it. If you do not know the history, earlier late oil changes may contribute to oilways being partially blocked. Not sure that any flushig oil would be a good idea with the multiair.

Which engine 8 valve or 16v ?

Round airfilter..or rectalngular ;)

I will ask a Moderator to move it to the 188's

Hello there. I don't think i can offer any help with your problem, but maybe you can help me :). Do you still have the old multi air unit? If so, would you be willing to sell me one of the hydraulic valve adjusters? One of mine broke, and the idea to buy a new multiair unit just for that horrifies me... Cheers, Dirk
