Hi guys,

I'm a newbie here :)

I've become the owner of a 2010 Punto EVO 1.4 Turbo Multiair (135ps) like 6 months ago. I bought it with 170k km in it, all in all it seemed to be in good condition. I've changed several things right after I bought it: timing belt, oil, oil filter, air filter....and a few weeks ago multiair filter, and rear brake discs+pads.

Generally, the car is doing well, no error codes etc. However, from time to time I can smell burnt oil, coming from the engine bay...in cold weather sometimes I could even see a bit of smoke..which disappeared as fast as it appeared. I tried to check several times when I saw smoke/smelled burnt oil (by quickly stopping, jumping out from the car and opening the hood), but I couldn't manage to find the source of the smoke.

When I changed the multiair filter and removed the plastic engine cover, I discovered spots of oil on the right side of the engine (if you are facing the engine, so it is the driver side in Europe). I believe that it might be the cause of the burnt smell...the slowly leaking oil, dripping down onto some hot parts of the engine and it burns there. I've attached some pictures, showing the part of the engine where I discovered oil leak (especially around those 2 black pipes, the thick and the thinner one). Has anyone experienced similar on his/her 1.4 Multiair turbo?

Any suggestion is appreciated :)

Thanks,
Istvan

The part you have highlighted it's the vacuum pump for the brake servo.
The vacuum pump could be leaking oil and require replacing. Vacuum pumps are very expensive from fiat bit you van get the same part elsewhere much more cheaply.

You could start by changing off the oil with a cloth and looking where it reappears from.

Oil could also be from crankcase breather , There is an o ring seal that is very cheap that may be leaking.
The crankcase breather is black plastic box directly above vacuum pump.

Thanks jackwhoo, will clean it off and see where it comes from. I hope it is going to be just the oring seal... And nothing serious

I believe the bit you have highlighted in the first picture with a circle saying "below this" is the PCV valve (positive crankcase ventilation) which takes oily air from the top of the engine back to the low pressure side of the turbo on the intake. In this instance that valve maybe a bit bungged up or blocked and the oil is building up inside and has found another route out, dripping down onto the engine.

Personally it is such a small amount of oil i would clean it off and keep and eye on things, but you could take the valve out and see if it would benefit from a clean.

Thanks Andy, will check out the PCV as well.

I've just changed today the oil so I had a better view from below and the leak seemed to be around the vacuum pump.
I ruled out the o ring, as there was no oil spot around at all. Anyway, I cleaned it as much as possible and will keep my eyes on it. In the coming days, I might remove the oil separator (black plastic box) to see how it looks underneath and to check whether it's from the pump.

If it's coming from the vacuum pump, then I really hope that it will be enough to replace the gasket only...not the pump itself :/

Btw, I'm really glad that I found your youtube channel :) Based on that I successfully replaced already the rear brake discs and pads...your videos are clear, and easy to follow. Precious material. Please keep it up! :)

Did you cure this? As I also have fumes entering the cockpit?

I do have a witness of oil on top of the rocker cover, around the oil catcher/PCV housing?

Change o-ring #5 on the scheme, it's FIAT part number 14457880, or buy any Viton 25.07x2.62mm o-ring from special hardware stores...

Thanks for the size 😊

Do you think this’ll be letting the exhaust/oily gasses out?

I may as well replace the PCV valve at the same time..

Totally sure. It's like i see my own EVO the day i bought it. PCV does not needs replacing. It would throw an error if it was blocked. Just take it out, buy a brake cleaner spray canister, use half to clean the PCV and the rest for the valve cover, replace oring and reassemble.

I bought 10 orings for 1 euro (did not find viton, so I got rubber ones to change whenever needed) and 4 euros for the brake cleaner. That's the total cost for this repair, if you do it yourself.
