Hi i begun to notice a rattling noise on my 1.4 8v punto evo active. The noise is present from start up and disappears when the clutch pedal is pressed. However once the clutch is released the noise returns the noise seems to be coming from the gearbox area. The clutch was also replaced in January.

Hi :)

Probably the bearing in the centre of the clutch

Go back to the place that fitted the clutch..

Hi mate nothing to do with the clutch all parts replaced on that front and the bearing sounds going on that were different definitely seems to be gearbox related just want to see if anyone knows.

Hi, I've also been experiencing a rattling noise on the same model (Punto Evo 1.4 Active 60 plate) for maybe just over a month, it hasn't got any worse from when i first heard it but seems to make more of a continuous racket when driving for a longer period. I managed to record the sound when idling after a short drive and giving it a little throttle to about 1100 rpm.

Finally got it fixed numerous mechanics recommended the clutch be looked at and finally the guys who replaced it took it back and fitted a whole new clutch citing faulty parts there is a small rattle if the engine has been runnning for ages now but monitoring that however a lot better now with a whole new clutch.

Not a clue what that is from listening it doesn't sound to good any idea where abouts the noise is coming from exactly? Your noise is completely different to the one i had.

Hope it didnt cost much :)

Hi :)

Does pushing the clutch pedal change the noise?

The red circle on the picture outlines around where the noise seems to be coming from.

Hi :)

Does pushing the clutch pedal change the noise?
Pushing in the clutch doesn't seem to alleviate or change the noise, it seems most apparent when going over bumps, potholes or on the motorway where it becomes quite a consistent droney sound. Looking to take it in at some point but dont know how possible that is with the lockdown situation...

Sounds like gearbox..or drivetrain :(

Not clutch :)

Noise change with engine speed or vehicle Speed?

Noise change with engine speed or vehicle Speed?

The noise changes to a more consistent droney noise whenever the revs pick up so its a different noise when on the motorway than it is going slowly through a car park.

I believe i have found where it is coming from. I've attached a picture which basically shows the exhaust flex pipe (please correct me if i'm wrong lol) and it seems to be slightly open possibly due the exhaust dropping? That'll maybe explain why it makes noises (rattles) when going over bumps due to it hitting the bracket and then the possible disconnect of the flex pipe is whats causing the droney sound? I should be taking it to the garage at some point in the week, hopefully it isnt an expensive fix... :shakehead:

Nice picture, makes it very clear!
Your exhaust is not only leaking, it is also resting on the subfame support bracket. Resting as in hitting it and causing a racket. It is likely that either the studs on your flexpipe are rusted through or the rubbers are busted and that's why it is hanging so low.
Since it is leaking as well (see all the black soot?) you are going to need to replace the flexpipe and probably the rubbers that it hangs off.

UPDATE: Noise is back slightly quiter this time so more then likely a gearbox issue now i think any clues?

Look at where your exhaust is hitting the subframe brace Sherlock.
No need to be smart aha. My noise is completely different to the guy above and i have reason to believe its the input shaft bearing just wanted to know if other people have experienced this issue.
