My radio will only pick up BBC Radio 1 (a bit fuzzy) as well as the FM I use for my FM transmitter (87.5 - sound quality is fine) and that is it. All other stations it cannot find.

The antenna cable in the back of the radio is snug and in correctly, and I fitted a new arial to the roof to see if that was the issue but still no luck.

Any ideas what to do next?

Cheers.

I had a funny feeling I’d get that response [emoji23]

I’m going to leave it for now until the weather starts to warm up and then have a tinker with a new cable.

I’ll update this once I’ve had a go [emoji1360]

How awkward was access to the aerial?

Ive got a slack mounted aerial on my mj..

Initial checks show it is letting in water..
One of the rear quarter trims has obviously been ripped off before :(

So a job I would like to look at when I get a chance..

Mechanics are my priority currently.

I’ve been having a play about and removed the roof liner and lots of plastic trim to follow the arial cable from the roof to the footwell in passenger side (it runs along the left of the car under the kick plates) and it all looks fine.

The cable from the back of the radio to the actual antenna on the roof is segmented and plug into each other. This meant I was able to unplug the arial from the top of the car and then attach it to the cable much closer to the head unit, and the signal was still non-existent, meaning it’s not the long cable from the roof to the passenger footwell.

I’ve came to the conclusion that the problem itself is in the head unit.

My next port of call is to see if I can plug my brothers radio from his mito into the cables from my car and see if that then gives me a signal through his head unit, using my arial.

I’ll update this as soon as I’ve done it.

I miss the annoying adverts and the same repeated songs!

Finally got to the problem - bad earth. I ran a cable from the aerial wire (at the back of the head unit) to the earth point near the bonnet release leaver and straight away it picked up all stations, result!

I’ve just left the cable there - is this fine as a solution?

Or does anyone know where the aerial cable is actually earthed? I’ve looked as much as I can but it looks like it’s well hidden.

Thanks.

You can see the earth wires coming out of the cable and going down to the metal of the antenna base, which then sits in the hole on top of the car which gives a metal to metal contact, earthing the aerial cable. If the antenna base rubber seal is bad, water can get in block this connection either by rust or debris, meaning the aerial isn’t earthed, causing loss of signal. Cracked it finally!

I’ve got a new seal for the antenna base and re earthed it so now it’s working better than ever.

There is a electrical circuit in the antenna base! Just bought a T5 bit and got it open to find this... looks knackered in my opinion [emoji31]

I’ll have to buy a new base now, bye bye £30.

(The previous picture was of a replacement on eBay but this clearly isn’t adequate as there’s no circuit like in the original base).
