I have a 2010 1.4, 8v Punto Evo, She had been sat for a few days ( using my Seicento :slayer:) and had previously run to and from work flawlessly ( 12 miles there and back, mostly motorway ). We had decided to go out for a Sunday run, and just as I had got to 70mph on the motorway there was a horrible shake that could be felt through the steering and peddles, couldn't make my mind up at the time if it was a severe misfire of wheel balance issue, also a couple of times the car dipped as if it had gone into a hollow in the road ( seemed to be from the driver side rear, as if a damper had failed ) , so aborted trip and headed for home, Monday went to get all four wheels balanced wheels, took her out for a run and the vibration seemed to occur at 60-65mph but was nowhere near as bad, but I still had a couple of occasions where the back end seemed to dip out briefly, like a gust of wind had caught the car, the day after I took her to the mechanic where I go for my MOTs to get him to check the steering and suspension etc, everything was secure with no obvious signs of wear, he swapped the front wheels with the back and said to give it a run ( that was Friday, not open over the weekend ) so give her a run over weekend and problem still exists, was intending on his advice to get wheel balancing re checked, but can't get that done till tomorrow now, would appreciate any advice if anyone has had a similar problem, initially I was just going to get mechanic to chuck a new pair of rear dampers on, but when he'd had a look he said all seemed fine, no signs of leakage etc, any idea's ??

Been out again for a run in the Evo, to see if I could try and pin point the issues, glad to say that other symptoms ie vibration/wheel in balance weren't present, its just the rear end that seems to briefly step out, like I mentioned in main post. Back off to the garage tomorrow for more head scratching ……………...

You’ve had the wheels balanced but have you had a good look at the tyres to see if there are any defects in them.

I had a pot hole take a chunk out of a tyre the other week and it gave similar symptoms, being a bit sketchy on the road and intermittent vibrations through the steering.

Thanks for the reply, I have her booked into garage again this Thursday for a test run and get her up on the ramps, that's a good point about the tyres, i'll give them a proper look over before I take her in, will post again when I know more, doesn't seem to be a lot on this particular topic at the moment, which is surprising the state of some roads :/

Collected Evo this afternoon, issue unresolved :( , she's been out with mechanic for a 30minute run and he didn't find anything, been on the ramps again, dampers, springs, top mounts, sub frame, bushes all secure, no audible clues either, you know when you know your car, and it starts doing something different, and I'm sure if I go out later she will show the same symptoms, maybe i'm looking in the wrong place, will carry on driving day to day and see if it gets any more frequent or worse, whilst researching other possible causes :/

I had a loose trolley jack rolling around in my TA..

AS well as loub thuds :(

I could feel the rear step out..!!

My car has been 'babied'

40k in 5.5 years..and NO heavy loads or hard work.

But the ride has been far from compliant from day 1.

I have a tired 07 mj for realwotld comarisons... ;)

Be interesting what transpires.
