Suspension noise

Got a rattly clonk on hitting SOME road imperfections.. not all the time.

2 questions:

1. Any revisions from 2006 to 2015?

2. Do the failing upper strut bearings generate such noise?

I cannot feel anything loose.. but know the bearings are notchy.

Any experinces most welcome. Thanks.

Re: Suspension noise

Hey V,
Have you checked your sub-frame mount as well ? I have had a similar ‘clonking’ on my Mk2 Punto, swapped out bits for new, but noise still there. In conclusion the Sub-frame mounting bolt (which is at the back of engine and welded to the sub-frame) joins, was cracked/rusted on the frame around where the rear engine mount is secured (a common fault in these models) so over time if left unchecked the mount breaks away off the sub-frame leading to a dangling engine on just the two side mounts no stability forward and backward motion and a necessary replacement . I I know this is not the same type of vehicle as yours but hope this gives you another avenue to explore. 👍🏾

Re: Suspension noise

Had a strut top bearing replaced on the Punto. It was making a boingey noise only when turning the steering wheel.

The panda did it a a few years ago and it was more suvere clunk because it held the spring still at the top for more degrees before the failing bearing moved.

You can see it happening if you look at the spring while someone turns the wheel while parked up. Fixed the panda one myself.

Had a random knock on the panda when going over some bumps. Turned out to be the bump stop hitting the under side of the spring top mount plate. Youu could make it happen by hand by moving the lump above the strut cover. Bit if rag solved it. But no idea how a lump of plastic sounds so metallic.

Have also had arb droplinks but was more tappy than clunkey.

Re: Suspension noise

food for thought.. and my tools.
cheers - I will update when I get some progress,

I was going to check subframe bolts next.. as I said - the usual issue / failure points seem fine...

Hub mounts, droplinks, wishbone rubbers.

it's actually 2007 ( 10 years of british roads..) but the noise has just started.

Re: Suspension noise

Have you checked ball joints? If the car is that age and they are original that could also be an issue. Only when really dead will it start to affect handling.
