Technical Problems getting gear change

Its become increasingly difficult to get the gear stick to change gear.
After not driving the car for a while I got in it yesterday and it would go into reverse:bang: the gear stick just wouldn't budge in that direction.


A trip to Kwik Fit and they said its not the gear linkage, its something relating to the cables and it'd need to go to the Fiat Dealership to be fixed.


I have no idea about car mechanics, can the car not just be fixed at a "normal" garage?
Fixing gear cables? is that expensive?

Try spraying them with WD40..

If it improved..spray with a light oil.

Is the gear lever stiff with the engine turned off. Is it stiffer moving lever forward and back wards or from side to side?
