Battery replacement and stop start

Hi all, been away a while but not managed to find any answers so here goes:

Recently bought a 2010 Evo, and it ran fine for a time. Then got an issue with the charging system and it turned out to be an alternator issue, replaced and all fine again.

Now the stop start, never really worked, no error messages unless you happen to stall, then the car would restart but say the stop start is unavailable. Not a big issue, but a niggle.

Now the real problem, in the recent snow the car failed to start, boosted the battery and off we go again. Now I bought a new battery, replaced it and head d off for a drive. I got an error on the dash (general error) triangle with exclamation mark and the stop start light on and saying it is unavailable. Searched the net, but not found anything that makes sense, BMW owners say they need the IBS resetting, to which I searched multiecuscan for an option, but could not find one. Thinking there might be a problem with the battery, I put the old one one and the error is still there.

Any ideas?

Sorry for rather lengthy post...

Re: Battery replacement and stop start

If you park my Punto with the engine still running, sometimes it flashes ‘start&stop unavailable’ then the engine cuts out after about 5 minutes and then makes a beep (just like the speed beep sound) and you have to turn it back on with the key to go again!

If I stall and the engine is warmish, pressing the clutch brings it back to life - no problem at all.

Why can’t it just do it’s job properly!?

Oh, and are you using a start-stop battery?

Well I waited to see if any one else chipped in as I don't have an Punto or stop start, but here goes.
Did you search on here for stop start and battery issues? There is lots of information. You really need to do some voltage measurements and possibly diagnostics using Multiecuscan (MES) www.multiecuscan.net or similar.
Prime suspect given alternator and battery have been replaced (you did get a stop/start battery e.g. AFB or AGM type) would be a bad connection. First place to look is the "ground" lead(s) between battery negative and chassis and engine / gearbox and chassis.
You may need to use MES to reset the warning even if the fault is fixed. It will also tell you what the computer thinks is wrong.

Re: Battery replacement and stop start

Thanks for the comments.

The battery is a Stop/Start - https://www.yuasa.co.uk/ybx7027.html - the one that was on is a FIAT part (looks new).

Multiecuscan gives the following error IBS warning. Now when I investigated further, I found that one of the pair of wires to the IBS was not connected (had not been for quite a while) which might be the source of the error. I am going to get a new connector fitted. But what is interesting, is the warning light was not on before I changed the battery.

I will check all the earth points, but again looking at Multiecuscan, the voltage at the EOBD terminal is a steady 14.4v and for the rest of the system it is 14.39v

Out of interest as well, I can disable the Start/Stop module via Multiecuscan, but then the car will not start, reenable and off we go again

I did not know the EVO had an intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS). You learn something every day. That being disconnected or faulty is most likely the root cause of the S/S issue. not sure why you can't start with S/S off though.

I've heard somewhere that when replacing (or disconnecting/reconnecting) Stop/Start batteries, you need to reconnect the main positive and negative cables first, then connect the IBS sense wire to the positive terminal a few seconds later.

I've no idea if this applies to your car, but worth a try perhaps.

Re: Battery replacement and stop start

Davren, IBS on the EVO is on the negative terminal, but yes tried that and leaving everything disconnected over night.

The funny thing I have noticed is that the light only comes on after a while, presumably when the battery has recovered from the startup.

The interesting thing is, with the original battery, it was taken off, disconnected etc and did not show the error, put new battery on and bingo warning light, put old battery back on, warning light still there

Re: Battery replacement and stop start

Quick update, found that one of the wires on the IBS unit was not connected and had not been for a while by the looks of it. Anyway, got it all sorted by a local auto electrician and the light did not come on. So changed the battery for the new one and still no issue, but the funny thing is now the stop start works...

Re: Battery replacement and stop start

Quick update, stop start working a treat, no issues, no warning lights.

Battery is YBX7027 - working well.
