Hi Guys,

My father in law is a mechanic and I sent him this video of the Punto's engine to get his opinion on how the engine sounded and he thinks the camshaft is on its way out. I'm not a mechanic by any means...like...at all, so I'm just wanting a second, third, or fourth opinion. It's a 1.4L Punto Evo 5dr.

Here's the same video he saw, do any of you guys think the camshaft is going bad?

Help me Fiat Forum, you're my only hope.

It is not a good noise from a FIRE engine.
Impossible to tell from a video exactly where the noise comes from, almost any moving component could be the cause.

Possibles:
Alternator - bearings. Check rotation of the alternator with belt removed, does it feel smooth? Is the alternator firmly fixed, also check it for cracking.
Belt tensioner. Again, remove belt and spin it.
Water pump. Difficult to access without removing cambelt, but needs to be considered.
Cambelt tensioner. As above.

Camshafts on FIRE engines don't wear particularly, unless they don't get oil. Late oil changes can clog up oilways with goo, preventing a good supply. A low oil level can reduce the volume fed to the cam.
Get the cam cover off and have a look. If not well, the cause needs to be diagnosed, not just the effect. Take pics, report back.

When was the oil last changed, has it been changed regularly?
Has cambelt ever been changed, recently? Was water pump done at same time?

Thanks for the detail. I know it can be hard to tell from a video but your possibilies gives me stuff to check which is great.

I'm away from the car until Saturday but I'll get all that stuff checked, other than the water pump, I doubt I'd be able to get to it.

Thanks again.
