Hoping for some help on suspected Multiair failure.

Please excuse me if I have posted in the wrong section, it is a very long time since I used the site and struggling to navigate my round the site.

I have recently purchased a Punto evo 1.4 16v multiair and think the multiair unit has failed, the symptoms from the car are

Noticed whilst reversing excessive smoke from exhaust and shortly afterwards the engine check light came on (and then went off and on intermittently)
Had a dash message "stop/start unavailable"
The Rac recovery guy said he thought the Turbo had failed and the car was recovered to my local garage.

The garage did some checks and said he thought the turbo was ok but diagnosed no compression on cylinder 3 and his reader was a reporting a mis fire had been recorded.

Unfortunately my local garage said he did not usually get involved in engine strip downs and I am looking taking it elsewhere.

The engine is now running very rough and lumpy and being a layman at best with cars I am hoping someone can give me some pointers or advice

Thanks for all your replies, been working away so had no chance to respond.
Found another local garage and it was the dreaded Multiair failure. The unit has been replaced now and all seems ok (fingers crossed)

And now, change oil and filter every ~6000-7000mls, also change MultiAir filter every ~20000mls, no matter what handbook or dealer says!!
For Euro 5 engines ( before 2015) use quality 5W40 C3 oil, for Euro 6 ( after 2015) use ONLY quality 0w30 C2 oil.(not many brands have this type of oil, be aware..!!)
See your original handbook for oil specs to be sure.

We take our Panda MJ, Alfa 156 and Giulietta MA to Heath Road Garage in Sandbach. It might be a bit of a faff with all the work going on on the M6 at the moment, but it's not a problem to make a day of it....or maybe half a day. Sandbach is a pleasant town, quite compact and easy to get around and only a 10 minute walk from the garage.

Alfie Martone who runs the place was at Mangoletsi near Knutsford for years and knows his way round most things. He reckons the MA system is reliable but does depend on being fed the correct diet of oil....and being topped up.

http://www.alfaowner.com/Forum/alfa...any-thanks-to-heath-road-garage-sandbach.html

He can be reached on 01270 764214 or on his website thingy which is www.heathroadgarage.co.uk ...........I think.

Anyway, I've always had good service and at a reasonable price, I'd recommend him, you'll also find quite a few good comments in the "Recommended garages" section of Alfaowner
