For some reason I have been under the impression that my lights had some sensing in the circuit and if there is a bulb failure I would be told by the dash.

Have I been drinking too much again?

My headlight bulb failed & nowt happened, having the bulb unplugged and nothing happens.

Its a Punto Evo Dynamique 1.4.

Should I have such a system?

Hello,

The light failure warning appear if an external bulb fail EXCEPT main beam/ high beam.

Why ? I think this is because it's high power and sensing current mean routing through body computer (is inside the car) with longer cable, loss of power, etc.
The other reason if one of this fail the driver should see quickly the difference...

So nothing wrong with your car

Hmmm, IMO it could easily be made to work without taking the current through the computer. But never mind, at least I know now.

Yes it can be done, it's far of an impossible thing to do.
It's more a choice I think, to keep cost low (a lot of cars does not have light failure sensing by the way).

So any suggestions on how to modify the car so it does detect the headlight too?

Are there any premade kits out there or do I have to design my own?

Perhaps I did not speak properly above...
Fiat can choose to monitor them or not, but for us to add failure detection it's almost impossible.
You should add current sensing for 4 loads, and connect this with body computer to manage and send warning to the dash... good luck :/

I had a look on ebay & there was nothing.

So to me it's a current sensor for both sides that turns on a single lamp, I wouldn't connect it to the computer. This imo is not too hard and is far from impossible but I guess I won't bother, a pay & plug solution would have been better :)
