Thought I had a bit of a close call last night as I managed to fit in 46.87L at the pump - however I have just looked back at my history on fuelly and have found I have put more than the quoted 45L tank capacity on more than one occasion.

Now I know you also have to consider fuel lines and filler neck but im kinda interested if the quoted 45L does not include a reserve tank of some form. I know on my Mk2 it had a 47L tank so seems strange to put a smaller tank on these days, although you could argue the fuel efficiency point.

What are other peoples opinions? have you in the past been able to fit in more than me? Is there a special reserve tank of some for which they fail to mention in their paperwork?

Edit:
Just looked on fuelly, there is one other evo owner which has managed to fit in more than 45L and that was on his first fillup. And a APE owner who manged to stick in just over 47L!

Best way to describe it is that manufacturers design the tanks to have an air pocket when full. So yes the tank says 45l but with the air pocket it's 46/47/48litres.

If you run the tank really low it is possible to fill the tank above the suggested 45liter. However in an impact the tank would be more likely to burst. What you'll find when you brim a tank, next time you come to fill it, it will let out some pressure.

So whilst it's always possible to fit more than the advised amount, it's not advisable. I'm. It sure if this is in any handbooks, but I'd as I'd advise against draining a tank and filling it till it clicks and adding some more once it's down the filler. It wouldn't and shouldn't cause a problem but in the event of an impact it could cause issues.

That's my belief anyways, correct me if I'm wrong.

We should not really fear an impact damaging the tank as it is under the rear seat, ahead of the rear axle. About the last place to get squashed. Which is why it is here.

I have the opposite problem. Got a voucher from my local Esso, 500 extra Tesco Clubcard points when I fill up with more than 30 litres. With a 35 litre tank, there's a bit of a risk.

If the Panda fuel guage moves when the ignition is switched on you still have plenty of fuel. Can run them until the needle is in the same place when the ignition is switched off :p
