Unhappy URGENT - Newly purchased sporting 135 multiair making strange ticking sound

Hi everyone

I have just purchased a Punto Evo 135 MultiAir (few days ago) which I absolutely love(ed)!

I have covered about 150 miles in it mostly spent on the motorway and really have been thrilled by it

However when pulling onto my drive tonight with the windows down I noticed a strange vibrating / ticking sound. The sound is almost absent when driving in gear but when revving even at low revs in neutral very noticeable from outside the car.

I have done a bit of scouting around and found this YouTube video which sounds exactly like mine (Cant post links yet so paste into browser after the .com

/watch?v=6iYMHwa98aw

Car was serviced and given a 12 month MoT as part of the deal, I was also given a VERY good deal for my car as part ex despite a dent in the drivers wing which thinking about it now makes me a bit suspect maybe

Any advice you can give would be greatly appreciated!

Checked the oil level and all is fine, no warning lights either

Going to contact the dealer in the morning but could do with a rough idea of what it is / how bad it is (hardly any knowledge of cars / engines at all!). Really dont want to get fobbed off or have a shoddy repair for it to fail a few months down the line

URGENT - Newly purchased sporting 135 multiair making strange ticking sound

It is too hard to say on a vid.
In real kife it is already not easy.

You need a pro. It can be inside engine or an accessory.

Keep us informed, thx

How many miles in total on the engine? and what year model is it?

Do you feel it is lacking power, excessivly rough or poor MPG?

Get a compression test on it. if it is a 2010 model then it could be the first sign of Multiair unit failure.

it's under full warranty let them deal with it,

TBH the OP / Owner may not want to tell the dealer waht the fault is.. then it is 100% down to thenm to fix it properly.. not just follow your "instructions",

Thanks for the advice everyone!

Engine has 37,500 miles on it and its a 60 plate (late 2010) model. Doesn't seem to be lacking power but it's hard to tell having driven a diesel for the last 4 years, anything would seem refined compared to the old VAG 1.9 I had

MPG isn't to bad either, got 47mpg on the way home with a mix of A roads and some town driving

Just come back from the garage now who couldn't find a trace of any error code logged, just a traction control slip error or something showing that the traction control had kicked in. Would that normally cause a check engine warning? My old Ibiza just used to flash the traction control light until it regained grip.

The technician that looked at it said he thinks it is a bit of metal or something in the catalytic converter bouncing around. Was going to take it off today and have a look for me but have a doctors appointment at 17:15 that I absolutely couldn't miss

Said its absolutely fine to continue driving around until Monday when it's going back.

Seem like quite an honest / decent garage. There was no pressure when I was buying the car at all and the sales guy was friendly but to be fair these days it's difficult to tell.

My problem is I don't have much mechanical knowledge at all! The multiair system sounds like an expensive part are there any other symptoms that might rule it in or out?

Many thanks again everyone!

Re: URGENT - Newly purchased sporting 135 multiair making strange ticking sound

Ha thank you for the feedback ! It is not as worst as it sound, good new

Effectively, if you have good MPG and no lack of power, engine should be ok, at least not multair unit issue.

Strange thing, second question is from what the metal piece come from ?

Right, your garage seems quite honnest, good thing too.

Keep us informed

Re: URGENT - Newly purchased sporting 135 multiair making strange ticking sound

Hi

I also own the exact same vehicle (60 Plate), I have owned the vehicle from new and covered just over 25k in it.

The same noise is present when the the engine is given rev when stationary (when the revs drop back off) its 100% the same noise albeit slightly less noticeable than in your video (but thats taken under the bonnet). The noise has been ongoing for as long as I can remember (I dare say it may have been there from new) it does seem slightly more prominent when cold.

I am fairly certain there is nothing to worry about, its surely just the alternator de-loading, I am under the impression its to do with the cars having a blow of valve and the revs dropping quickly (is this possible?). You will never hear this noise when in gear, ever.

I don't think its a normal noise. Sounds way to rough for the engine to be designed to make that noise plus my neighbors Moto 135 multi air makes nothing like it.

If the garage isn't sure about it I think I will take it to the local fiat garage and get their opinion on things. If it can't be fixed there is always SOGA to fall back upon

Seem like a decent garage though so hopefully can be fixed and it won't come to that, no way is it a normal noise though

Perhaps it's baffles in the manifold breaking up? Corrola's were Known for it.

Re: URGENT - Newly purchased sporting 135 multiair making strange ticking sound

Hi there, I have a 60 plate evo sporting too which I bought 6 months ago and makes exactly the same noise. I took it to the fiat dealership not long after I bought and they weren't very helpful, I didn't get a straight answer in the end so I just left it. My car performs fine and I'm getting up to 33mpg out of it as I only ever drive it about town. It's just rather annoying that ticking sound because when you give it some revs it makes the car sound like a heap of junk when you would generally expect a nice clean rev. Would be nice to pin point exactly what it is!!!
