Technical URGENT - Newly purchased sporting 135 multiair making strange ticking sound

Hello,

I like to re-open this thread and hope members are still active. I just bought myself a fiat punto evo sporting 2011 135HP and have the same tickeling noise. I already opened a new thread about it but now stumbled across this one.

i was wondering if shortening the actuator rod is a permanent fix or did the ratlling sound come back?

Also does shortening the actuator not increase the turboboost levels of the engine? i am afraid it will and may damage the engine also.

I made a video of my engine which shows the actuator rod muted with piece of cloth and unmuted.

See link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O7DS0RbMPnw

Hope to hear from u guys!

This is something I had with my car. Exact same thing and it happens with a lot of Fiat punto evo. Quite easy to fix.
You need to tighten the wastegate preload on the turbocharger by about 1.5-2 turns. The noise goes away. It's because some seem to be abit loose coming out from the factory. The job is about 30 mins.

Hello fs123,

I appriciate your response. i have been to a couple of (fiat)garages and asked them how to fix this. All of them said the problem is most likely my wastegate valve thats worn out which causes it to not close properly and gives lack of turboboost.

This would also explain why i dont have any torque untill i reach 2600 rpm. according to specs i should have max torque (206NM) at 1750 RPM.

Yesterday i measured my boost lvls and they seem to be okay. i get 15 PSI boost at about 3000 rpm and it then drops to about 9 psi in higher revs. This confuses me because i would expect to get lower boost with a wastegate valve thats not sealing correctly. Maybe someone can explain this?

The guy who sold me the car is offering to replace the turbo with a revised turbo for 340 euro incl labour. I think i am going to accept his offer and not mess with the preload actuator rod because all specialists i went to advise me not to because it could blow up the engine if you overdo it.

Question to fs123 at what rpm do you feel the turbo kicking in? And did u notice a diffrence after u adjusted your wastegate actuator?

Hope to hear how you think about this and will keep you updated

greetings

I think my turbo kicks in at around 2000rpm ish, I don't fully floor it enough times to properly know. Apart from that, I am inclined to say that I feel the car has a bit more 'oomph' to it. This is obviously because I tightened the wastegate preload so the valve opens at a later number of revs.

Thanks
