Any updates on where the noise is coming from?

It might be the linkage on the wastegate actuator rod that's rattling, well it is on mine. Fiat are not being very helpful at all with the situation. Just trying to get as much money out of me as possible it feels like. I was wondering if an upgraded actuator would solve the problem but everyone I've spoken to seems to think only a new turbo will cure it. The rattling is really bad on mine though, verging on being embarrassing to drive so I am desperate for a fix aha!

I'd suggest asking the likes of turbonetics or turbodynamics to see if they can manufacture a new wastegate actuator for you, although I'd like to think they would possibly need your own one to manufacture from.

I have had a closer look at my actuator and rod today on my sporting.
I did film it but can not load it on here.

I have come to the conclusion that it is the actuator linkage that connects to the wastegate. I put a screw driver on the link to reduce play and this stops the rattling when revving on tick over, see photo 2 on the right hand side where the screwdriver is.
To fix this I would suggest a washer or shim to reduce the play on the link, this requires moving a clip on the end. I am no mechanic and I know if I tried to remove it, it would probably flirt off and disappear into the engine bay. I will take it to my mates garage when he can fit me in.
I do not think its the turbo as it does not affect the performance in anyway. My girlfriend suggests do not rev it up when the car is not moving! haha

When researching on the web about this rattling I have seen that VW 2.0t TSI have a similar problem the fix is similar too.
There is a video on you tube with the fix solution

Cheers for the help mate, fortunately I have now been able to get fiat to take it in for a diagnosis finally, which i have been waiting for about 7 months for now aha. I will report back on the diagnosis and the possible solutions for a fix as soon as they've seen it which is on the 16th!

Resurrecting this thread as I have exactly the same noise in my 2011 Bravo Multiair. Car is obviously out of warranty. Can anyone give me some idea of how much a new turbo is going to cost me ? or can I just ram a screwdriver into it to stop the rattle ?

Does the soubd only happen on boost?

Plenty of other things can "tick"

See video on post no. 4 of this thread. Noise occurs mostly when car is in neutral and is backing off from being given a blip.

My 105 multiair is going into Fiat this week to have the Multiair actuator replaced. Just caught under warrenty. £800 bill, to be picked up by Fiat phew! Apparently the new units do not fail. We shall see.

The fix for this if it's the rattle on the turbo actuator is simple and can be carried out by yourself. On mine there was minimum preload set which causes the rattle. Add more preload and this fixes the rattle and your car should be slightly more responsive due to the actuator working correctly.

alex evo you're a star !
Carried this out just now and the death rattle has gone. Gave it just 2 more complete turns as I didn't want to stress anything but even at that it feels a bit perkier. There's another couple of tutorial Youtubes apart from the one in your post. I think this one is pretty good:-

Interesting that the heat shield is held on with normal bolts on the Dodge engine whereas I had to find a T40 torx (as well as 10mm socket) to remove the one on my Bravo - why ?

Thanks for pointing this out Alex! Had this problem for ages, knew it was related to the waste gate. I'd even fitted a dump valve (which sounds great btw!) thinking that it wasn't dumping the waste properly. Glad to find it's an easy fix, I was expecting a huge bill.

Hello . I have an Alfa Mito 135 HP , 1.4 multiair and i have the same problem . I wanted to ask you , modifying the actuator will not end in consequencies on my engine/turbo ? Will they not be affected in time? Thank you

You don't actually modify the actuator, the rod will have just loosened and needs tightening up mate :)

I am just in the middle of the operation. However it appears that not the rod have a tinyplay but th gate itself has it. If you are online maybe i can call you with a video?

Modyfied it. Had it at -1 mm preload. Added 2 mm (4 turns) . Now is at +1. No more sound.
