Hi

Just wondered if anyone could help with my parents Punto.

I got in it yesterday and the car wouldn't move. It seems as though the brakes had become stuck but then eventually free'd themselves. I had washed it the day before and know they can sometimes stick a little afterwards but it had been used since being washed.

They were properly stuck as well as usually the car free's itself easily but this time it wouldn't. Then all of a sudden the car just rolled away freely without even trying.

Is this normal??

I could be wrong (often happens :D) but is that not a sign of water/moisture in the brake lines. When brakes are applied, hydraulic fluid heats up, the moisture turns to steam, jamming the caliper on... then when it cools down again, it condenses and releases.

When was the brake fluid last bled/changed ?

Thanks for the replies. Not sure where they were stuck it just wouldn't move. Drums on rear so I am guessing they are the most likely culprit. The car was fully serviced by the Fiat dealer when it was purchased in July 2012. It hasn't happened again so far.

it'll be the damp in the drum causing little rusty spots - grabbing the friction material of the
shoes ( LARGE contact area ),
had it on an old marea after flooding,

some parked-up cars will NEVER let go , that's why you are advised to leave in gear + chock wheel instead long-term,

best to get drums off and check things though,
could be rusty / sticky mechanisms - mine needed replacing,

Ok if you have drums be careful. As varesecrazy say, they can stuck easily and its is really hard to move.
Best solution is reverse or back/forth to try to unlock it.

Near I work, there is a garage, cars with drums and some week in the backyard are evacuated with stuck rear wheels... no chance to get them free.

Only problems I had with Punto was in Winter, my mechanic has done something, hope this winter it will be ok :)

I had the same issue with my evo at the end of last year. After having the dealership look at it they changed the master cylinder.
Had this done twice. Mine was the hill holder locking on.
First time it freed itself after 20 mins but second it locked on and I had to be towed.
Third time (after the master cylinder was replaced) all the breaks locked on.
Could be a different issue but might be worth a check

This will often happen after washing the car and then leaving it until the next day before use. Water on the discs cause some rusting overnight and the pads stick to the discs. They will usually free off with a graunch and a jolt, then make a swishing scraping noise for a few applications. I often wash the school car on a Friday or Saturday, then leave it until Sunday, so this happens most weeks. Weather conditions can make this better or worse.

The rear drums are less likely to do this short term, but may seize on if left for more than a week or so. Don't use a pressure washer behind the drums as this may fill them with water. Whilst it will drain out, it will leave a lot of wet inside.

Probably no need to worry. If concerned, next time it gets washed, drive it up the road and back. (Making it dirty again)
