So I was driving to work last week when all of a sudden I could smell a coolant burning smell and steam coming from the bonnet. Got there, pulled the bonnet and there was coolant in my engine bay, which is normally not a very good thing. Drove home that night very carefully and opened it and the whole coolant take had gone in a 20 mile journey! Fiat took it in the next day and the mechanic said oh its your EGR box gone, so in my head I thought what an idiot coolant has nothing to do with the EGR but let him get on with it as it was under warranty. When I got it back the next day I went to my pals workshop as he is a FLA specialist to get some oil. I explained the situtaion to him and straight away he knew what it was. The EGR valve is inside a black case just next to the exhaust manifold and the coolant passes through it to keep the EGR cool. However it doesn't work to well so with a combination of the EGR temperature and the manifold temperature the case eventually crack and your coolant drains like a kenyan well! Luckily this one was under warranty but theyre normally a 800 quid replacement excluding labour! And there is no aftermarket replacement to stop this happening! The car has literally just turned 2 years old so its pretty worrying just how much I'm going to spend on egr boxes in the cars life. So Mjet drivers beware!
