I'm in the process of buying a 2010 Punto Evo (a 1.4 Multiair Eleganza) for my wife, and as a surprise, I want to upgrade to DAB.

Having done a bit of Googling, it sounds as though JVC head units come out on top, but I'd rather not mess about with fascia adapter plates and spoil the look of the stock unit.

That points me to one of the hidden units that works of the existing head unit/steering wheel controls. The AutoDAB* claims to work with 95% of cars on the road, but only appears to have options for 4 Fiat models - not including the Punto Evo. Does anyone know if one of the variants actually works with the Evo?

If I do go down the road of replacing the head unit, I've only found single-DIN adapters, although I've found an Italian site where someone appears to have put in a double-DIN unit. Is the Beat 390* an option, and is there a fascia adapter someone can point me towards?

Beyond that, what are your experiences of switching to DAB?

Many thanks in advance.

Your flag says your in the UK, why do you want to upgrade to a radio system that is a downgrade?
DAB is pants.
AFAIK You have to be in a really good coverage area and if you go slightly out of it you lose radio al together rather than just get a slightly bad signal.

Besides, it only needs to be able to pick up radio 2 :)

Not at all.

I've got an old Pure Highway in my own car and that does great. Even with the crappy aerial that you stick to the inside of the windscreen, the sound is much better than with FM.

The only issue with it, is that it receives the DAB signal then effectively 'broadcasts' it over a spare FM frequency to the head unit. Sometimes, if you drive around the counrty, you find that this 'spare' frequency belongs to a local station, and you have to fiddle about to get an available one.

As I understand it, modern units use a wired FM modulator so there is no interference from local stations. Plus, I intend to get a proper DAB aerial, so I'm expecting really excellent sound.

I'm in a hire car from work at the moment, and it's doing my head in not being able to listen to Radio 6 (I did use my phone to listen over the net and through an AUX cable, but it was giving my data allowance something of a kicking!)

Anyhoo....

Getting back to my original question, the AutoDAB
DAB-FT1 model (autodab com/Fiat.html) says that it is compatible with the Grande Punto. How different is the stock audio set-up in an Evo?

Did you ever get any further with this? I think I've got AutoDAB fitted in my Punto by Fiat.
