Punto Evo Sporting with different exhaust

Hi,
I have just bought a Punto Evo Sporting, and whilst at the dealers I saw a Abarth 500 leaving the forcourt, and the note of the exhaust sounded amazing, so should I buy an Abarth Evo exhaust, and how much are they, or any recommendations to other exhausts?

Re: Punto Evo Sporting with different exhaust

Look on youtube for different exhaust notes but if you are looking for a specific note then a custom exhaust may be required.

Re: Punto Evo Sporting with different exhaust

Replacing a cars exhaust is all new to me, haven't the foggiest, not sure whether backbox or full, didn't even know the difference earlier in week. Just loved the sound of the Abarth 500 the other day.

Re: Punto Evo Sporting with different exhaust

well if thats the case then a little internet trolling is in order mate. Let ms try guide you through the options :

Backbox: Just the rear silencer
Cat back, the exhaust system (middle section and back box)
Turbo/manifold back: as above but includes cat (make sure the cat is hologamated for road use though (new MOT regulation) or just make a heatshield that covers it completely so nobody knows )

Catalyst (Catalyic converter), as most people know is designed to reduce emissions. Whilst most 200 cell cats (Also known as sport cats) do this well, manufacturers like to annoy people and put a quite restrictive one on (To meet other countries emissions?). Now only problem is, unless you, or someone you know, are good at TIG welding, sports cats only tend to be available for turbo- or super charged engines.

Middle sections of exhaust can comprise of more than one component (I think the punto has 2?) And tends not to have the flexi pipe. Most vehicles have a 'mid box', a pre silencer that usually reduces low note sounds (IIRC). Most people swap these out for a straight pipe which therefore reduces backpressure, better exhaust note and higher number of ponies.

Backbox is a common name that refers to the rear silencer. To be honest and IMO, unless you to have altered the mid section, replacing the backbox is pointless (My opinion) unless you want to sound like those stupid corsas. Tail pipe design is also a factor to consider aswell. Do you want a gapping hole like, say an Impreza, or something toned down like, say the abarth (twin 80 tail pipes).

Any other info, let me know

Re: Punto Evo Sporting with different exhaust

Wow... Great help thanks, although at this time of night, it's causing steam t come out my ears. Well will my Sporting Multiair have a sports cat?

I hate drain pipe exhausts, looking for something tasteful in appearance and with the Abarth 500 note or similar. Would the Abarth 500 Cat back or tubo back be able to be fitted to the Sporting? Not sure how it would look, but those exhausts are easily available?

Thanks for the info, great help for a novice!

Jim

Re: Punto Evo Sporting with different exhaust

Hi mate, if you have the time and money, anything can fit anything, thats what I say. I have no idea if the 500 abarth box will fit. Not had a look at both bocxes together, someone else will be able to shed light on that.

Az for sports cat, there is a sports cat available but the only direct replacement is a supersprint one thats one the other side of a grand. If you wanted, you could get the abarth turbo and then you can get a direct replacement from TMC for only 310. If TMC can confirm that the cat from the abarh is the same as the sporting, that wpuld help me.

Exhaust boxes are few and far between. Theres not alot of choice unless you get a universal box.

As for titanium (i seen in your post in the other thread) Titanium is jsed to reduce weight of the exhaust system by around ~10kg, not a huge saving but anything is a bonus that reduces weight.

Any more questions mate?

Re: Punto Evo Sporting with different exhaust

So in a nutshell, to change the exhaust on my new car for a tasteful yet sporty sounding one I am looking at £1k +

Ok so if I removed the second silencer from the stock exhaust would that be too loud? Or is there another tweak/mod that I can do? Just wanting to improve the exhaust note without chavving my car, and also on Motorway the exhaust not to go stupidly droney. Not fussed on increased BHP, would remap it next year at end of warranty. As for the Abarth 500 exhaust thought it may work and it could look great, but unsure if would cutting chunks out car to think that the finished result is awful!

Thanks for your advice!

Re: Punto Evo Sporting with different exhaust

First off, Dont let me confuse you over the sports cat, its not required for a change in the exhaust note, if you were to replace the cat with a sports cat, youll be looking at around a 10bhp increase alone. A sports cat allows the exhaust gases to stay within emission levels and also leave the car faster. So in a nutshell, for an exhaust system (cat back) would cost around £450-600.

Well as for the midbox being removed, the abarth evo doesnt have a midbox and isnt stupidly loud. As for noise from the backbox, I remeber doing the exhaust on my colleagues astra coupe, after removing the backbox I told him to start the car and there was no noise. Not sure on the sporting but it could be the same situation.

As for the 500 exhaust, again I have no clue on design of the box, it may just require a small adaptor pipe manufactured or a slight bend put in the pipe.

If I was you mate, Id go and find a garage that deals with custom STAINLESS exhaust systems then you can choose your own note and they will be able to give you a price and timeline on how long it would take. Also it may be cheaper than a direct replacement as you aren't paying for a specific brand.

Re: Punto Evo Sporting with different exhaust

I’ll go out on a limb here and say that the Abarth 500 exhaust will not fit even with modification.
The cheapest and probably best option for you is to do as I did and replace your exhaust with that of the Evo Abarth.
It removes the centre box and replaces it with a straight pipe and the backbox is also less restrictive with twin tailpipes and gives a nice burble, it certainly does not sound like a chavy ‘performance’ system.
The only slight issue is that the tailpipes sits a fraction lower than the standard (doesn’t bother me) but if you have a look at my gallery you’ll see a pic there.

TJ, use shorter rubbers or bend the brackets to get it sitting higher

Thanks, I will have a look in my area.

You say the cheapest option, but doubt I will find an Abarth Evo exhaust anywhere near as cheap as you, any idea on rrp?

No idea of RRP although there was a fair few going on ebay at the start of the year so as long as you weren’t in a rush and simply kept an eye out you’d get one.
Either the Evo Abarth or Grande Abarth one would do as they are the same.

Will do, and also look at pricing from custom exhaust companies.

What's with this? Twin exhaust, never seen a Punto with one of these.

Re: Punto Evo Sporting with different exhaust

As i stated, a custom exhaust would possibly be cheaper, An abarth exhaust including back box will be around 200-400 depending whether its stainless or mild steel.

Before anyone says anything, If you do get a custom stainless exhaust, it would work out cheaper as stainless doesnt rust like mild steel and therefore has a longer lifespan.

DO NOT buy that box as its mild steel with stainless tips. But a twin exhaust doesnt suit any car other than those that are prefitted with twin exit pipes.
