Hey,

I purchased a 1.4 8V GP a few weeks ago, 10 reg and has just done over 10k miles.
I have been on the motorway a few times now and each time when you reach 70mph the engine sounds so loud! its like it wants to change gear or something.

The revs were just over 3500rpm @ 70mph, is this normal?
In a way I am hoping there is something wrong because I want it fixed as its rather annoying.

P.S. is this why fiat introduced the "increase volume with speed" feature? :yum:

I am not sure... I didnt buy it from new... got it second hand a few weeks ago.
I noticed it the first time I went onto the motorway though.
Car was serviced in January 2012

I have noticed this above 50mph aswell. I have thought this is awful loud but i've only drove it above 50 a couple of times, at normal 30mph speed is sounds completely normal and fine.

Yes this is normal, tbh i get some noise when going at around 50mph and above

I had a 1.2 vw before and made regular trips to blackpool on the motorway and ay 70mph the revs were at about 3500rpm (a lot of wind noise and engine mixed in lol)

This is what you get with 5th gear being so short
On my 1.4MA 6th gear is much taller, at 70 mph is less than 3000rpm iirc

I had a Punto Evo as a courtesey car when my 1.6MJet sporting was in for its 21K service and can confirm that at 70mph it is screaming along at 3500 rpm. Took me a bit by surprise as I am used to 2000rpm in my MJet at 70mph! Just the way it's geared I suppose - didn't think it was that noisy.

Very normal and very annoying.
I've got a 10 plate 1.4 8v with less than 1200 on it and I'm absolutely hating it at the moment. Then again I did go from a "breathed on" stilo MW JTD to this little underpowered thing. Hell, even my old mk 2 punto (1.2 16v) was quicker off the line and quieter than this one.
In 5th gear this new one will be running around 65-70 mph at 4000 rpm. In my old mk 2 I would have been doing somewhere between 90-100 mph at those revs in 5th. It sounds like there's a nest of wasps in my engine bay!

The increase volume with speed feature was present on my mk2 and on my stilo so that's not new :)

I'd also like to point out that I can go from 1st, to 2nd and straight up to 5th on the flat without labouring the engine. Either there's a heck of a lot of torque coming from that engine (:ROFLMAO:) or the gears aren't set up very well!

I knew I should have waited for that 1.4 turbo to come in stock at LC motors (n)

I dont think the engine is loud.....Mine sits at just over 3200 rpm at 70 and 4000rpm at 80mph.It runs along lovely for a little 1.2 8v.Car has done 2500 miles so far.Have done several trips up motorway and I normally sit at 70 to 85 and apart from slowing up on inclines it goes along really well for a little car.I came from a 2.5 v6 MG and thought this new car might be really slow but I have been very surprised all things considered! :)

The impression I've gotten so far is that it's a car built for the inner city rather that the open road.
I miss my old stilo. I once left the sun roof open (I had the massive full length sun roof) and bombed down the motorway to Chippenham where I was based at the time at licence loss territory having completely forgotten that I'd left the roof open.
I only realised this about 10 miles from my destination when I hear a dull thump from the other side of the car. I looked over to the passenger seat. A seagull had decided to join me, a decision that had apparently cost its life! :yuck:
The good news was that over the 60 mile trip at those speeds I still managed 50 mpg! (y)

Right my friends 16 year old 1 litre nissan micra on the motorway sounds like a mouse compared to when I shove my punto into fifth gear which sound llike its going to blow up at any second :/ not very enjoyable tbh
