Just ordered my 1.2 MyLife which the dealer happened to have at one of their other branches!

Couple of questions:

Is the 1.2 considered slightly underpowered? Will I have to keep changing gear when going up hill? My mum has a 2004 1.2 Punto which she thought was, but I'm not sure if they've improved them?

Do the MPG values on the website actually reflect that of the car? Are people finding it more efficient than stated?

Thanks

I have the 1.4 8v GP which is a fraction faster than the 1.2 in 0 - 60 terms. And i find that it is underpowered, and have to down the gears to maintain speed when going uphill. Gets to 70 pretty quick, but after that its just petrol out the window and slight acceleration:bang:. I have tried to drive as economical as possible and got to 40Mpg, but others on here have had much better consumption, I suppose it gets better the more miles you've done.

But it's a great looking little car.

I've had my 1.2l Mylife for almost a year now and I've never found myself in a situation where I've felt that it was underpowered as long as you drive it right. Its certainly no highs-speed cruiser, but what it lacks in grunt, it makes up in economy as I do a mixture of town, motorway and country driving and my average mpg is never lower than 45mpg and more often than not in the low 50's. I used to get the same mpg out of a 2.0l diesel so I think the 1.2l Mylife is a cracking little economical car.

Interesting and encouraging as well to read the comments regarding the 1.2 in the Punto Evo; it could well be an option for our next car as the current deals are really good value for money (certainly more so than the 500 which has seen increase after increase since we bought ours).

It's pretty much the same in the 500; personally I've always found our 1.2 to be fine in most situations, but you do need to be aware on the roads, especially with hills approaching. You can't just plant your foot down and expect much of a response in 5th though!:D

hi,

i own a 1.4 8v gp, and when driven right i never have any issue or need to down shift when at or half way up the hill if ive ran out of puff, theres too many lazy drivers that ride round in 4th and 5th gear that think the being mr green when in truth the labouring the engine and burning more of the vauble petrol..........

The 1.2's are well underpowered if you're lugging a family around but OK-ish driving solo. The 16V has a bit more grunt.

in the sporting, if you're not getting into 4th and 5th sharpish, you'll be doing around 35mpg instead of 50. and that's definitely not a labouring engine ;)

I generally suprise passengers with the power the car has,

My mate drives a 1.6 cooper s with a supercharger and even he commented saying that it aint half bad.

It got me to Newcastle from Manchester, around 160 miles or so on less than a quarter of a tank of fuel when my mate in a 1.2 Corsa got no where near that!

It's a great car, if your prepared to rev it past 4500 rpm, you'll get off fairly quick, not so good for fuel but that beautiful Italian engine noise is all worth it :)

i get mine friday and am hoping that 45 to 50 mpg is realistic as this was a big reason for buying it
compared to my 1.1 206 that sounds like a tank and drinks more water than anything ive ever known i suppose anything will be better

The best thing is to try it and to test the road you know to see if it goes well or not.

I have the 1.4 8V on my Punto 2012 and I am pleasantly surprised (and my old car was a 150BHP Fiesta ST).

It is clearly not a "high speed runner" or a car that kick your a*, but the 1.4 8V with a relatively short gearbox is sufficient to drive fluently. Thanks to variable camshaft timing, but cons the 1.2 does not have this.
Most of my trips are for work and I am alone, this can help too.

Try it it is the best advice :)

I've just had a look at my mpg for trip A and I've done 850 miles since I last reset it and over those miles I've average 49.2 mpg. I tend to change gear when the display tells me to, so spend most of my time in 5th. I've had the air-conditioning on full-blast for the last few weeks and have still managed nearly 50mpg, so decent mpg is certainly achievable.

well finally got my new toy today and after 50 miles im averaging about 27mpg not bad for the amount of times i stalled it lol (new biting point etc )
hoping to get a better figure after a few months
