Hi Guys,

As with a few post I've seen I've used the forum to do a bit of research before taking the plunge.

Got myself an ex-demo 61 plate Evo Sporting 1.6 Mjet in Ambient White and will be picking it up right at the start of December, as that's when it finishes it's 3 months as a demo car, its the most powerful nearly new diesel I could get, and I do quite like the looks.

Just checking to see if I've missed any problems to expect. It doesn't have rubbing strips, so those falling off won't be a problem, and I know about the cubby hole issues. Anythingelse specific to the engine I should be aware of? Most of the Sporting posts relate to the Multiair which I know has a different gearbox as well.

Thanks :)

Wey hey!

Another 1.6 Multijet Sporting owner - why are we so thin on the ground?
A car that gives you upwards of 55mpg in normal driving conditions, 0-60 in 9 secs if you need it, and £30 a year road tax? Happy days!!
I got my Sporting a couple of months ago and it still puts a grin on my face when I drive it. Had the Bravo 120 Dynamic before and do miss the refinement slightly (better sound system, climate control) but can't fault this little car one bit. No niggles or issues for me so far. Have hear about the DPF issue but will cross that if/when it happens. Looking forward to many more happy miles! You've made a good choice there mate - enjoy!!:D

I've heard about dpf issues, I'm not too worried, I'll be doing 2 140+mile trips a week, plus 12 miles of quick A and B roads to work and back, if it can't regenerate from that then there is something wrong!

Yep, I'm currently doing 70 mile daily round trip during the week on 'A' roads and dual carrigeways so probably won't notice the regen. either.
BTW out of curiosity, what's this about the cubbie hole? Haven't heard about that.

They might have improved it by now, but I know a couple of Fiat mechanics, and they said the cubby holes, especially the one to the right of the steering wheel is cr*p. There are a couple of threads on here about it. You'll open it, go to close it, but somehow the hinge will have gone so it wont go back into the slot properly, it's unbelievably flimsy.

Right O.

Haven't noticed this fault so might only be on early Evos.
Have taken a mental note for future reference.
Let me know what you think about the Multijet engine on a day to day basis.
My opinion is you cant beat it for mpg vs. performance!

Evo Stew (Used to be Bravo Stew)

Well, I've had it a full 10 days now and done around 700 miles (that's not a typo).

It's really nice to drive on back roads and motorways. The engine's great, I will admit there doesn't seem to be much torque from tickover to 1300rpm, but it just takes off upto about 3000rpm, lots and lots and lots of torque.

I'm not even driving that economically and got over 450 miles to a tank with an average of about 53 mpg. The quoted figure (60+mpg) was always going to be optimistic but it's alot closer thanks my C2 VTR was (quoted 40+ vs actual about 30mpg).

I will admit the gearbox is a bit imprecise, I've fluffed changes into 3rd twice and had it pop out of 5th because I hadn't put it in properly even though it felt like I had. It's no worse than my dad's Polo though.

The Start/Stop and Hillholder are really useful, I know people who don't get on with them in Audi's etc, but the system on this seems to work really well.

Overall I'd say it's definitely better value than the equivelant German hatchback, and the engines so better than a fiesta or a ibiza. We'll just have to see how reliable it is I guess.

I'll second that last comment!

Good to hear you are enjoying the multijet engine.
Must admit I also dropped a few gears in the early days - but used to it now. Mine's at 16K now and has loosened up nicely.
Still at a loss as to why there aren't more Evo Multijet Sportings on the road -welcome to an elite club! (y)

Good to hear the gearbox gets better, it's the only small niggle I've had with the car.

Definitely an Elite club, there's only about 6-7 for sale new/2nd hand nationwide and only 2-3 on here.

One more 1.6 Multijet Sporting to add to our ranks!

Mine was picked up 7 weeks ago with 3 miles on the clock and has now done just over 2400 miles. I typically get 51 mpg (calculated fuel used over distance covered) on A-road trips to and from work. However, the computer reckons 53-55mpg for the same journeys for some reason.

It's nice and powerful. It has kept a number of cars honest (after a very sedate first 1000 miles of course), but I'm coming from a Honda S2000, so am used to 6 second sprints to 60 mph... Having said that, I never got more than 38 mpg in the S and am happy with the Punto. Seen some interesting ECU re-maps - might be tempted outside of warranty period; unless anyone knows about a "Fiat Friendly" re-map...?

I've had the climate control, parking sensors, style pack, Acid Jazz (or "blue" to me and you!) and audio upgrade... other than that it's a stock Sporting.

Had it exactly a month, done 1500 miles (4100 total for the car) and the engine warning lights come on. Well, 2 lights actually, the engine symbol and the triangle with the ! in it, both in amber. (n)
There's been no dip in performance or economy but it's going in on Friday, the earliest I can get it to the dealer.
Anyone know of any common sensor issues that would cause this? My gut says lamda sensor, but I haven't driven through any big puddles recently.

Is your Start/Stop saying unavailable and giving the odd beep as well?
Mine occasionally throws up the lights your describing along with the start/stop unavailable and it is apparently a software update that is required, although my local Fiat dealerships system is currently broken so I have to wait on them getting it fixed before I can get the software update.

Yep, the start/stop is saying unavailable, but I know that if you get any engine related warnings the system is immediately disabled to ensure it doesn't do any damage to the engine.
If it's just a software update that's much better than anything being broken/needing repair.

Looks like you were correct TJ07.
Took it to the dealer on Friday. Had to wait an hour or so while they worked through their checklist and diagnosis.
Needs a software reflash, but the version it needs won't be released for a few weeks yet so they've just cancelled the code and said if it comes on again bring it in and give it a more thorough inspection.
I hadn't lost any performance or economy when the light came on, just the start/stop, which wasn't a big inconvenience.

I’m still waiting on mine getting fixed too!
I’ve been told that they expect to be able to get it sorted within a few weeks although I’m not holding my breath!

hey guys i picked mine up the other day :D its 2 years old with 18k on the clock, had a coil over go and to get it into first gear often proves difficult so i have to put pressure on it and bring the clutch up to pop it into place. but apart from that i couldn't be more happy! looks the mutts nuts and flys past zetec s' at a breeze!

Dont be hard with gear lever, or you will kill your gearbox...

First gear should only be put at stop. If you want to put in when the car is moving, you should double declutch to facilitate gearbox synchro's job.

You could also do an oil change, it can help.
