My Aircon compressor makes a noticable whirring noise when it is on. Is this normal or is it faulty?

With the radio off you can hear it quite clearly. The noise stops when the aircon is turned off. IT still blows cold so no other noticable faults.

yep, mines bloody noisey too, bounced it at Fiat, answer;

'this is the noise it makes due to the electo-magnetic clutch'

Pretty pants really but thats all i got.

One thing i do notice tho (1.4 8v) is that it takes a shed load of power out the engine!!
