Hello I am new to the Forum
Please could someone help me, I have just purchased a 2010 Punto EVO 1.4 GP 8v
A very nice car I must say.
Help, has this car got all these safety features fitted as standard?
ESP Electronic Stability Program + ASR/MSR,
HBA and Hill Holder (electronic device to assist hill starts)
When I turn my ignition I only I see Battery, oil, Airbags ABS etc. but I seen no ESP lamp illumination, I have contacted Fiat uk and gave them all my details and they promptly replied with a nice letter and assured me my car has all the safety features listed and are fitted as standard. Sorry if it’s been discussed already. Any help advice or test I can do will be very much appreciated.

I’ve just checked the brochure which I still have from when I bought my sporting and according to it the GP does NOT have ESP Electronic Stability Program + SR/MSR, HBA and Hill Holder as standard, it is however an optional extra.
The brochure states that it is only standard on the Sporting and the now discontinued Elaganza models.
It is an old brochure however (May 2010) and I have also checked the Fiat website which states that the GP DOES have those functions, so maybe Fiat have now added the feature to the GP model or maybe the website is wrong. Seems a strange one indeed! Do you have the ESP button on the dashboard??? If so I’d say you have the function ;)

Thank you TJ07 for you reply, It does not have the ASR button on the dashboard this after reading in the forums is what has got me questioning the specification my car, I read in the handbook page 105 and this is the exact words, SYSTEM ACTIVATION The ESP system comes on automatically when the vehicleis started and cannot be turned off. So I thought having no ASR button may be ok. Before I purchased the my car a week a go (its only 10 months old) I went to the fiat website and compared the standard spec on 3 models all have 5 doors 1.4 8v GP , 1.4 8v Active and 1.4 8v Dynamic . (I tried to post the Fiat Punto EVO showroom Compare / spec but it won’t let me post the link)
Under the safety section of options / standard equipment it says it’s standard on the GP and Dynamic, but £200 option on the Active. Thank you, very confusing and annoying as ESP and all the other safety E.T.C. was what I was after on my next car more than anything else.

Well just to add some more confusion, the ASR is actually the traction control, although I was told by a certain Fiat technician that switching that off also controls the hill holder, ESP etc. Now I have known some Fiat techs to be wrong in the past, so your car may well still have the features. Try testing the hill holder out, if that works (and you'll know) then you’ll know that you’ll also have the ESP. (y)

Another strong indicator would be under the bonnet somewhere is a unit with something like BOSCH - ESP written on it :p

My cars in dealership atm so cant say exactly where, wasn't hard to find though.

Also other than the ASP button I never see any sign of it being alive i.e no ESP lights or anything, I just know if i slide the car or wheel spin things start to flash at me... But i'd suggest rather than trying to under-steer around roundabouts & slamming into a tree its probably best to check under the bonnet ^^

Nice one, Thank you TJ07 and Blank2k2, I have never been so confused with a car in my 17 years of driving, I phoned Fiat on there free 00800 number and explained my concerns, and the so very confusing spec, Fiat website say it has all as standard, you say it has all as standard, What car website under there Fiat Punto Evo Hatchback 1.4 8v GP 5dr Data and Spec Under Safety Say, Traction control Standard, Electronic stability programme Standard. So I had a go what you suggested TJ07 on the way home from work about 10:15pm found a nice hill 15%, foot on clutch in gear foot on brake, foot of brake rolled back fast, had a few goes no luck, I will have to go to the local fiat dealer as Fiat uk told me to and see if a tech person can have a look for ESP unit as Blank2k2 suggested. First new car been able to afford in 5 years gone from well happy to well disappointed. (n)

Wouldn't worry too much if it doesn't, Hill Holder is overrated imo... I've often decided "Right :D Lets see what hill holder can do!".... and i roll back and crap my pants, other times it works and its good but its not a system i'd ever rely on.

and as for the ESP itself, while its an undeniably brilliant safety system I imagine most people will (hopefully) never experience its designed input.

ASR is pretty cool in snow/ice, but again it's not really required...I love my evo but it doesn't have the tiger blood running through its veins to squeal off the road & into a tree if you hit the gas too hard unlike some so I don't see it being a must have.

ofc if it does, great.. if it doesn't its not the end of the world :) I wanted it for safety as I was regularly doing long journeys at time of purchase, but wasn't willing to pay £500 for it as an extra... in the end i went for the Eleganza, which luckily had it included as standard (Eleganza/Sporting are the only ones who had/have it as standard, £500 extra on all others.)

Enjoy the car! (y)

Thanks Blank2k2,(y) Its just annoying when the spec is written down in plain clear English, and confirmed by Fiat UK this is what you car has, but a week later you find it hasn’t, Hill holder I don’t care about at all to be perfectly honest, but I live out in the sticks a bit, I can’t afford a nor want a 4x4, as you say the ASR, ESP after doing a lot of reading would be great for me living in Derbyshire and its wonderful wintery lanes and 30 mile drive each way to work, and I agree its all not that essential. My other job I had a company car a Toyota avensis ASR, ESP ETC, it
Made great work and fantastic in the snow and ice roads, as when the winter kicks in here you know about it!! As for the Eleganza/Sporting only having it all fitted as standard I wish the fiat web site stated that clearly and all the information was clear, but its listed as standard fit on my car, if not I would have saved up a bit longer and got one of those models, we have young kids in the car and I we like safety. (And I don’t like the Avensis it’s too big and too expensive to run and too ugly lol)
Thanks again

Had a look this morning and found the ESP unit on my sporting, I have attached a pic to give you an idea of what to look for under the bonnet, as Blank2k2 stated the sticker marked ESP helps it stick out.

On another note I stay in the sticks as well, and with the addition of winter tyres to the Evo it was almost unstoppable even through this winter. (y)

TJ07 thank you for that very much appreciated, and thanks to everyone’s help and advice, fordyl, I do understand your point but my soon to be 18 year old daughter will be driving this car and it just that peace of mind living rural where we do. If you wanted to purchase the Punto GP for the spec as listed on the Fiat UK website as standard equipment and paid more for the 10 month old GP only as I have officially found out this morning by the Fiat technician whom plugged the box of eclectic computer reader thing into my car to be told all it has is ABS With EBD only:(, Exactly what the Fiat Punto 1.4 8v Feeling Good has, I am not saying that the feeling good is bad in anyway but I chose the spec of the car I wanted. So GP was the affordable price for me. My 7 year old car I just got rid of had ABS With EBD so in this crazy world we live in any bit more of safety can’t be a bad thing. (Should have had the 207 pug the misses wanted)
Oh well lets see what Fiat UK have to say in reply to the letter I just sent them, I know the reply already your tough luck!! :bang:

Not forgetting the MyLife of course.

Also as my other car is a 3.0v6 auto diesel, I'm quite used to holding the car by the footbrake on a hill and am confident to use the hill hold. I deliberately tried it with the Punto the other day without any problems.
