When i drive at low speeds in high gears, 10 in 2nd, 20-30 in 4th, basically when maintaining speed at low throttle my car seems to buck and surge. it is usually very subtle but sometimes quite bad.

For example, every day i sit in a long queue doing about 10-15mph. This is too fast for 1st as it is 2000+rpm and progress is jerky just because of the sensitivity and fast pickup in 1st so you have to be in 2nd but if i try to hold the revs at 1400rpm and have to lift of slightly to drop the revs to say 1200rpm the car starts bucking and jerking. I end up burying the throttle to stop it.

Also during a run when i have to go through a 30 limit the car feels like it keeps surging when doing 30mph in 4th, this is very subtle but i can feel it through my body.

To put it bluntly, i can only drive the evo properly smoothly if i am really heavy footed!

And also, first thing in the morning for literally a minute or 2 the engine seems to hesitate a lot and feels like it has lost most of its power.

does this happen to anyone else or is it just me?

Mine doesn't do that!

I typically drive around 1400RPM to keep optimal MPG. I do 30mph in 4th all the time and 40mph in 5th. I seem to find these the best for the MPG :)

Sounds a little strange. If looking to hit the turbo i normally find a fantastic response around 3000-3500RPM.

I can only see my car not responding amazingly fast when at low RPM. maybe view the MPG thread to find out how most drive their evo...

Also have you installed the ECO drive software? if so it may be worth doing to see if it offers you any tips?

Mine doesn't do it that badly, but normally if I low-rev & go upto 2nd the car kinda surges, can feel it jerking but the revs look fine etc... usually after a few seconds / a blip it sorts itself out, seems to do it at altitude more than at ground level too (my dad lives on top of a hill, and i notice it when i leave his house regularly)

But I cant say after 10mph & the first minute I notice it or feel it again.

Hi, I know what you mean I have the Multiair GP and have noticed it when stuck in traffic on the motorway. It appears to want to surge away when your in 1st and before you know it your a centimetre from the car in front. I can only presume this is the norm for this engine; I've now done 8000miles in my 59 Plate which I bought in November. The MPG is pants as well only 37.8mpg.

37 mpg !!! christ your lucky i get 29 if im lucky and thats driving 30mph in 4th gear and ive done just under 2000 miles too i find the car unresponsive on take off if you dont give it the beans and as for the jerky feel the car def dont like when its cold !

have you checked/topped up your oil?

Yes! I get this all the time! :s I am so fed up of it but mines (105 mulitair gp) been in the garage more times than I can remember! I thought it was the recalls that was causing this to sputter or misfire but after the recalls it still does it! My conclusion is that its just the engine now... :( but I'm changing to a 135 sport soon! :D fingers crossed that's good!

I find I'm doing most of my driving in 6th gear. Even at speeds of 30mph I get the shift up sign when in 5th so I just get into 6th as quick as possible. I do mostly motorway driving and my average MPG over the past 800 miles is 58.5 which I'm pretty happy with!

The Sporting does the same thing. Very dramatic when slapping the accelerator or being too gentle.

Once the engine has warmed up this all goes away.

Cold Engine is a biatch. Let the engine warm up before you kill it!
