Engine warning light- safe to drive??

Hi folks,
Had an evo 1.4 end of August last year and haven't had any problems with it up until Sunday when the engine warning light came on, and it started beeping telling me to check the engine, took it to the service dept of the dealership Monday morning where they couldn't tell me if it was ok to drive or not and said it would be best if I left it with them. They said they'd reset the system and it worked fine up until tonight when it's started doing the same thing again. I've already missed one day of work this week, and I really cannot avoid not going in to work tomorrow, so can anyone tell me if they know, for certain, that getting this looked at a second time can wait another 180 miles or am I likely to break down on the way?
Cheers very much,
Dan

Re: Engine warning light- safe to drive??

Both times my engine warning light came on with the check engine message I drove the car straight away and it didn't cause any damage. One was a serious problem which resulted in my car needing a new headgasket but my engine wasn't running properly as the warnings came up. Second time some sensor on the start stop was sending the wrong message and the onboard comp needed some tweak. All was fine

Thanks, will give it a shot and hope for the best. Can't believe a car that's less than 5 months old is giving me crap already.

EOBD legislation includes a counter/timer that details how long the engine light has been on plus key on's etc.

The handbook says take to garage however if you dont and serious damage occurs as a result then you could be in for a hefty bill.

Is your “Start Stop” functional or does it tell you that it is unavailable?
I had a problem with my Evo sporting a while back where the engine management light came on and it stated “Check Engine” along with the beeping sound and the “Start Stop” was also unavailable. Turned out to be something to do with a gear selector sensor or something along those lines, no big problem and was fixed quickly by the garage.

Yeah, comes up with "Stop Start Unavailable" as well, just assumed that occurred with any engine issue. When I took it in Monday they said it was an electrical error, but if it happened again
I really don't fancy a hefty bill, but can't really miss another day of work. Think the phrase rhymes with clucking bell! Thanks for replies.

Sounds like the issue I had with mine & yeah your warranty should certainly cover it!

Re: Engine warning light- safe to drive??

As long as the car doesn't sound like it's going to die then i'd say your fine.

Infact, my engine management light came on alittle while ago & the car vibrated etc was pretty odd... after a couple of restarts the car was fine again, but i phoned the dealership and told them the problem, they said they'll want it in to look at, i was expecting a first thing in the morning job.. but instead i was given a 2 week wait & i wasnt told not to drive it or anything so im sure it's fine.

I've also had this. Was an easy fix and covered by warranty.

Re: Engine warning light- safe to drive??

So I drove it 180 miles to work and back yesterday without it blowing up, good start. Taken it back to the dealer this morning, they called up a couple hours later and said the 'brake boost pressure sensor' was faulty and needed replacing. They can't get the new pressure switch until Monday then it's a two day job to fix it apparently. Does anyone know what this brake boost pressure sensor is/does and has anyone had similar problems?
