I'm a week into owning my evo sporting and no matter how low I keep the revs I cannot get over 26 mpg i change up early and have not been speeding ! The fuel gauge also drops over night ! I put in 2 gallons ( and it wasn't completely empty) and I drove 14 miles it now says I have 40 miles left! What's you guys average mpg? I'm pulling my hair out !

Hi Don 1973 & Welcome...
Assuming you dont have a petrol leak which you should be able to detect with the Mk1 human nose...

Your car computer is basing the remaining fuel on your current driving style & technique, that will change if you adapt the way you drive... Been driving long? You can never expect great economy in a city environment though.

Your engine will still be tight up until it has covered a few thousand miles, economy will improve.
Dont labour the engine, let it rev & run, find its Bhp & Torque sweet spot, usually around 2,500 to 3,500 RPM.
Using that formula I have found my current car is good for 42MPG knocking about even though it is a 1.6 petrol.
The very best fuel economy device is the drivers brain & left foot.
I also found running down hills in top gear (not out of gear) foot off the throttle, helps a lot(y)!

been driving for 22 years so I know what I'm doing and i know city driving don't give great mpg but for a new car ( 144 miles in the clock) its still really low and as for 2500 revs and up chance would be a fine thing if i did that it would tell me it was empty! My 54 plate sporting gave me at least 32 mpg in the same area and that had no turbo and had no where near the same claimed mpg !

Then I'm sure all the answers lie within you... (y)

If not take the car back to your dealer maybe?

For comparison, my Sporting has now done around 600 miles, only gets used to drive to work and back (10 miles each way through country lanes) and the best I've got was 38mpg average for a tank. Hopefully on longer runs and once it's loosened up that will get better.

Thanks guys ! I'm gonna give it a couple weeks and see how it goes I only http new cars and change every 3 years when the first m.o.t is due so ive broken in quite a few cars but this one seems to be the worst by far! And 38 miles on country lanes is quite good just want to get in the early 30's ill settle for that !

I own a evo sporting. Here are my figures below:

Best: 49 mpg (cruise control on at 60mph over 15 miles)
Worst: 29 mpg (3 city journey from home to work)

I'm not a fan of the way the fiat trip computer records the data. VW's system is much better as it has 2 trip readers - 1 cumulative value since the last you filled up / reset the trip computer, and another which automatically resets itself after 3 hours or so of the engine being switched off. The Fiat system only records the average mpg since the last time you reset (average A). You do have the option of adding Trip B in the menu, but you'd have to reset this manually every f*cking time and personally I can't be arsed. Much prefer the VW system.

What i'm getting at is, your trip computer is recording the average since your last fill-up at the petrol station or the last time you reset your trip computer. Your driving style could change at any point between then / you could drive in a range of situations (eg. city with lots of start / stops, then a long run of 10 / 20 miles etc) ,yet the average mpg might not change all that much.

In general the mpg of the sporting is way off the combined 47 mpg listed in the brochure. I'm spending a lot more in this than i did in my tdi, which is in part to be expected, but I still thought 40mpg should be fairly achievable given my driving style.
Around town I'm managing around 35mpg - yours should def improve.

I'm currently on 1500 miles so will be interesting to see if it will improve within the next 5 - 6000. I think however, that I'm just going to have to get used to filling up more often.
Plus side is, it's a lot better on juice than the new fabia vrs / seat ibiza cupra with the twin-charged 1.4 petrol. I'm hearing they're achieving <30 mpg on briskoda forums...

personally if its dropping overnight you may have a leak.

as the fuel will be vaporising.

my advice is to brim the tank at night and leave it till the morning. if it goes down you have a leak take it to fiat. if it stays the same drive on a full tank and reset the trip meter see what you get over the next few hundred miles. i leathered my 1.4 77bhp and couldnt get it below 34mpg. so yours is dreadful considering it should deliver more than the 1.4 at normal driving. give fiat a ring see what they say.

@willsevo yeah I hate the trip on fiat to I've just come from a BMW 1 series and the trip in that was supurb and very accurate ! Id settle for the 29 mpg you get both you and tom55tom have done a fair few miles on your carsand my engine is still very new and stiff with only 155 miles in the clock so it should get better with more mile im gonna check to see if my fuel is vapourising as tom55tom suggested cause I don't see how I could only get 50 miles out of 2 gallons of fuel and at very low revs too I ain't taken the car on a long run yet furthest I've driven is 24 miles one way and 24 back and that included a bit of city

What's the full story?

range? trip? av.mpg? av.mph? av.mph? hrs?

When you drive-off in the morning your black-box read-outs will immediately change - when you switch-on they're based on `yesterday' (end-of-day/warm engine) & not `today' (early/cold start).

My Sporting has done 1110 miles now, I do 25 miles to work and half of its country miles and its currently on 37mpg so its similar to yours.

@baby278278 I'd love anywhere near that figure I'd settle for 33-34 here's hoping I can archive that 175 miles on the clock now I think I need to take it on the motorway !

I thought the new multijet gave a lot better economy...In that case it seems that the 1.4 multiair achieves a better mpg...odd...
