General Opinions of the 1.2 Stilo wanted

I've said it in the Punto forum (from the courtesy cars I've had), and I'll say it again; the FIAT 1.2 engine is excellent!
I had a 1.2 Stilo Active for a weekend on demo - it was a fun little car, but it did struggle a bit. It was fine with me, but quickly lost its guts when you added people. Hence, i went for a 1.6.

It's a great car!!

We tried a 1.2 but also ended up going for the 1.6. I think the engine is just a bit small for the size of the car, and the extra gear can't help it out enough.

My wife has a 1.2 stilo and I guess it depends what you want from a car. If you want a cheap, very roomy, economic and well specced car that has reasonable performance in town traffic it is a great car.

The engine is an absolute jewel and in my experience from courtesy cars the 1.2 is a lot smoother and quieter than the 1.6 and 1.8 in town.

It is capable of long distance travel but is hard work on motorways as to keep the engine in the power range requires a lot of gearchanges but from Guildford to Bath (where my daughter is at university) only takes 10 minutes more than in my car (Saab 9-3 Aero).

I could do it a lot quicker in mine but wouold probably lose my licence in doing so.

My Stilo is an 1.2
Engine is nice, consumption is very low. Power is non existant though. I just won't accelerate, but I expected that. The fuel consumption is the most important thing since I drive very short distances (3-6km) and the computer says the average consumption is 8.2l/100km which is LOW. Before this I had an old 1.3 Toyota which took about 13l/100km.

Starting price of the 1.2 was so low that I could take all the options I wanted, get the windows tinted etc. I looks great, and people come looking at it and wondering what the heck it is (fully debadged) and saying it's a really good looking car.

6th gear is a challenge for this engine, but it can handle it.

I'm very happy with it so far. If I get frustrated with the lack of power, I come home and hop on my motorcycle [}:)]

Cheers for the helpful info.

I own a TDi Escort at the moment, and its just getting to that unreliable stage, well i have humped 50,000 miles onto it in 2 years.

But my high milage driving has reduced, so a car like the 1.2 Stilo i think suits my bill. If money was no object then obviously i'd have a 2.4 Abarth, and ideally i'd probably go for the Diesel, but seeing as the Stilo is so cheap in 1.2 form its hard to ignore.

Its just a shame Stilo is italian for Style, it should be italian for Steal! :)

The only problem is that the engine is too powerless for that car.The Stilo is among the heaviest cars in the class.Thats why FAT put a 6gear transmision in the car but i dont know if that helps.

It's not a case of the engine being too small for the car. People look for different things in cars. Fiat recognise this and thats why the Stilo is available from 1.2 to 2.4.

The 1.2 isn't quick, but it's incredibly cheap to run and insure. That's the market Fiat are aiming for with the 1.2 Stilo. For small money you get a reliable, good looking car loaded with equipment and with enough room to fit a small country in.

Good looks, practicality, economy (both with fuel and with other costs, purchase, insurace etc) and reliability.

Thats all i'm after, i don't tend to speed, maybe 75 but never much over, i've done the whole drive like a nutter thing when i owned my Saxo VTS.

Hi

I test drove a 1.2 and was very disappointed. It was far to weak in the engine department. I ended up buying a 1.6, and it's still far too weak in the engine department, it's like having a body like Shwarzenegger with a two inch willy, looks the part but doesn't actually perform in any way.

The trouble is, the Stilo is loaded with so many gizmos it weighs in at 1275k which is bloody heavy, you need a big motor to move it around, I used a courtesey 1.8 and it was no different to the 1.6.

Great looks, good build quality, I love mine, but it's just too underpowered and to add to this I only get around 26mpg, and I believe this is because you have to work this engine hard to make this motor move!

Buy one anyway, I wouldn't be without mine, get the 2.4 if you can afford one, although I've read in reports that it's the only car in it's class that has 180bhp but feels like it has 130bhp, I'm sure this has to be a weight thing cause FIAT make good engines, or at least they used to.

As I've said in some other thread, people who buy 1.2's have something else in mind than engine power.

I've had my share of 200+ hp cars. They're fun but when people get older, their priorities change.
I wanted a cheap to use, good looking, reliable car that'll take me from point A to point B with minimum costs, and I got it.

Oh, and I pulled a full trailer today, loaded with junk, bringing the total weight to 2160kg, and I had no problems at motorway speeds. 6th gear was useless though.

I tell you again, 1.2 is perfectly enough.

I read a test in a magazine. the comparison was between stilo 2.4 focus st170, civic typeR and one more i cant remember. in the final lines the author wrote something similar to this.

Stilo is out of comparison with this cars because it has very big engine but if you want to cruise at high speed long time and you love to drive, abarth is the solution.

Been talking to a man from Arnold Clark (garage) they've got a 1.2 Active 3-door in Sassy Grey (the light metallic blue) for £7488 which has to be an amazing deal, seeing as book price is £10600.

The bloke is phoning back in Thurday, think i might arrange a loan rather than accepting their finance. Only offered £500 on my Diesel though, bit of a shock that!

I am tempted by the 1.2 5dr but have only looked at list price of 11K something. How much should I get one for new if I find a good deal?

woooo wait a sec before you go splashing out on a 1.2 Engine you might want to consider the 1.9 JTD 115bhp Engine....

I suggest you look at the prices from Jamjar....

its £9500 for one of the finest engines that the Stilo has to offer!

You test drive it and I assure you - you'll love it..
You say you do loads of miles... Well the JTD has one of the highest fuel economys in its class at 55mpg!!
That doesn't mean though it sacrifices its power oh no - when the VW drivers see me coming with the FIAT badge emblazoned on the front they quickly scarper!!

If you can afford the JTD go for it!

How much is the "diesel-tax" in UK? Here in Finland it's so high that you'll have to drive 20000km+ per year to get any advantage in fuel costs.

Another question, why are you using mpg? I thought you were in metric system? ;)
