My in-laws use sage, and have been for decades

It's the best out there for self employed, small business. Sage for when you start getting bigger (but has the price tag to go with it, especially the support).

If you want to go cheap / free and don't mind self help you can give Microsoft Money Plus Sunset a try although You'll probably note it's aimed more at the US so will need some tweaking for our laws and tax rates: https://www.microsoft.com/en-GB/download/details.aspx?id=20738

hmm just relooked at quickbooks and its says only £12 a month now i am sure it was more last time i looked about a year ago?

will it remind me of stuff i forget, atm i use a lady and if i forget to tell her my mileage or drawings she will remind me. atm i am not vat registered due to being under the limit but have been advised i should register anyway especially as 99.9% of my sales are vat exempt
