After a long drive we are now 100% sure that engine fumes are entering the cabin.. on our tidier 07 mj

Got it up on a tyre and exhaust centres ramps.. other than plenty of rust.. all appeared sound.

The car is lousy on fuel 54 vs 68

History.. owned for 10 months.. always had an occasional hint of gasses: fumes

No obvious issues found.

Oil level hasnt moved..and motor looks dry outside.

Oil not changed ( due this week)

What is the EGR : Recirc system like on these mj's ?

Last run was 60 mph for 2 hours..
our clothes smell of the fumes.. NOT HEALTHY..!!

Air flter is good.
Fuel filter.. unknown..

Glowplugs replaced on purchase.. runs soundly.. just not 'right'

Updates due:

Injector seals: appears dry in there.. when Im ready to drive it again.. I might put some water in the wells and check for bubbling-froth.

MAP Sensor: plug is not 'locked' so has obviously been disturbed.

Info on cleaning and testing would be most welcome

MES Testing.
Both of my mj's sound pretty similar when you cycle the EGR solenoid

Are there other helpful figures I can compare from the comfort of front seats?

EGR solenoid. Shuttles on demand with MES..and the same muffled tone on both cars.

The EGR body just appears as a 'finned cup' 3 x securing screws and a connector on the end.

No obvious water connections.. can I just uncouple the finned body?

Pics in next line.

Ok..

After a cooked battery

Car is now back to running reliably.. but still got fumes :(

I did the injector seal test.. filled the wells with water.. ran engine.. no leakage..or bubbles.
(I thought it was fine as area looked ok.. see previous pics.)

This weeks running around has shown me that sitting at busy juction obviously builds fumes under bonnet :(

So by the time you pull away and get to 10mph its pretty strong again

So.. what next?

Talk of screen wash stinking.. unlikely.. as I never spray the stuff..
Might just dump it though.. ;)

EGR.. sounds VERY time consuming :(

Boost hoses..? A bit of a faff.

One idea..

On all my old FIRE petrols ( and older..)

There was a recirc hose coupled with the air filter..

Not seen anything obvious on the mj..

Is there a rubber recirc hose anywhere that could be open to atmosphere?

Contemplating a 'gungum - exhaust bandage' type of patch to see if that made the difference..

I studied the pics more closely..

The retaining clamp is at a jaunty angle

Just hope I can get it all back together properly.. looks like its been there a while !!
